Thread: Midtown

  1. Default Re: Any New Midtown Developments?

Metro, it depends upon how technical you want to be with regard to midtown. Here's what I mean.

MidTown OKC uses that spelling for the area around Saint Anthony. However, midtown could be considered the entire area from downtown to uptown, including perhaps AAlley. Maybe this is why people have posted AAlley stuff here.

But I do agree, we should create an AAlley thread and possibly move the AAlley specific posts to there. Mods/Pete?

Legos go downtown: OK CityScape exhibit to be at new location

OKLAHOMA CITY – In a year’s time, Oklahoma City has doubled in size, at least when you’re counting Lego bricks.

OK CityScape, the animated Lego toy replica of the state’s capital, is back for its second year of raising money for Educare, the state’s new concept for early childhood education. This year, however, the exhibit has moved downtown and grown substantially.

“We really wanted to be a part of what’s going on downtown during the holiday season, so we decided to move from Penn Square Mall to downtown,” said Rachel Hernandez, president of ToyScapes, the venture philanthropy organization that manages the exhibit. “We definitely took a leap of faith because the mall has built-in traffic, but we believe that Downtown in December and OK CityScape can generate the traffic downtown that we’ll want for Educare.”

Last year, CityScape featured more than 1 million Lego bricks that created replicas of prominent local buildings and sites, including the Oklahoma City National Memorial, the Skirvin Hilton Hotel and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

This year, in its new home at 1100 N. Broadway Ave. in Automobile Alley, the exhibit has some 2 million Legos and new additions like the Oklahoma River, Devon Boathouse and the historic Automobile Alley building that now houses the exhibit.

“We have Devon Cruisers that kids can race down the Oklahoma River, which, of course, is made of Lego bricks,” Hernandez said. “We also have some robotic trucks in the exhibit that are outfitted with spy cams and monitors so the kids can see from the driver’s point of view.”

Last weekend, volunteers descended upon the exhibit for “population day” to place thousands of figures in the exhibit or create Lego versions of themselves.

“That’s the fun part of the exhibit – to see real-life situations going on at the street level,” she said.

Last year, CityScape had 10,000 visitors and raised $175,000 to benefit Educare. Hernandez said she hopes to double those figures this year. The exhibit will be open Nov. 6 through Dec. 31 and is part of the Downtown in December lineup of holiday activities.

Two new activities have been added this year: Friday night story times geared to ages 7 and under, followed by a Lego activity, and a Weekend Workshop Series on Saturdays in which youngsters can participate in age-appropriate activities.

Hernandez said that last year she learned adults are as big or bigger Lego fans than children. Plenty of families and youths
came through the exhibit, but adults unashamedly went through it, as well.

“I always had to ask them what brought them there, and it seems like Lego bricks have a certain nostalgia,” she said. “They were just as interested as the kids in the exhibit.”

Local adults also were brought in this year to expand the exhibit. Last year, Lego master builder Kurt Zimmerle led the initial construction phase. This year, several local architects and engineers moonlighted as Lego builders.

Does anyone know if Lego sets will be sold at this location?

I think it would be a good idea if they did. A percentage of the proceeds could go to the charity benefit too.

I think you mean Spartan, not metro. I said nothing about the two distinctions, although I see why many people consider AA in MidTown.

    MidTown / Auto Alley news....

Noticed work going on above Broadway Wine Merchants at 8th and Broadway. Top floor, 3rd I believe, is being worked on. All windows have been removed and are being replaced.

    Anyone know the scoop?

Saw some construction/renovation today on a building on the North side of N.W. 10th street, between Robinson and Harvey.

Just east of a small surface lot.

No kidding. Midtown Deli was such a wasted opportunity. I didn't think there was any way a decent deli could flop in that location, and then I actually visited the place. Not really a deli. Indifferent and occasionally terrible service. Marginal food. Just a real failure of vision here.

Agree. Midtown Deli was a "deli" in name only. I went once and never went back. Terrible.

It is possible, however, that Louie's is even worse.

  17. Default Re: Any New Midtown Developments?

Louie's used to be a pretty solid place to grab a cheap bite, but the quality has gone downhill to the point of being nearly god-awful.

  18. Default Re: Any New Midtown Developments?

I actually liked Midtown Deli, and they had great sandwiches. I thought it was cool how they had live music a lot. Every time I went by the place though it was either absolutely packed or absolutely empty and starving for business. That's not a successful way to do business.

I imagine they were hoping for some development and thought they would be accompanied by more residents soon after they opened. Boy were they wrong. That's why it's sometimes difficult to speculate on what is a good location to open a new business.

I don't think Louie's does anything great, but I actually think they are much better than what everyone else is saying. They have a decent selection of drinks, always a nice layout (TVs...), and lots of local sports memoribilia. I'm sure they will have tons of Thunder gear up. That will give it some local flavor. Their food is okay, but their pizza is actually really good. I think this is a huge upgrade, but that is partly because of how poorly Midtown Deli was run.

So, any idea as to when the change is taking place?

    What are these?

    8: P-R Res

    9: Tiffie Res

    10: Firedorm

I see he just added the last two.

PR Res was already announced on here awhile back. OKCTalk's own, ookkcc, is building there, I won't use his real name unless he chooses to post it. Not sure what Tiffie Res is, however I know that lot just sold for mega bucks. It is next to the old lot that had horses on it and Ken Boyer cars. I know a young couple with last name Tiffie that lives at Classen Glen, so not sure if it is them building or what. I'm sure Dennis can fill us in.

  23. Default Re: Any New Midtown Developments?

Cool. Firedorm would be a great name for a housing project, but that's just me. I wonder if land speculation is starting to happen in SoSA as well? Those properties in there for the most part, with a few exceptions, are absolute teardowns--coming from a dedicated preservationist.

Although I see from the link that the property below, located on the south side of NW 9th between Walker & Dewey, is not in the SOSA area, do you or anyone else know what if anything is proposed for the crappy Century Hotel? It is located east of the St. Anthony parking garage south of the hospital. Following a doctor's appointment in the physicians building west of the parking garage, I was struck by the total incongruity of this property with the otherwise splendid developments in the area. The map below is from google maps.

I can see that it has a pleasing deco style and could probably be made into something nice but, as it is, I can also see that it has equally unpleasing state of care, repair, and is generally unkempt.

Anyone know anything about this property?
