just so those no OU needs players to hit the portal as they currently are over the scholarship limit .. (with the 18 guys they just signed)
Yea it was seemingly intentional but given that we are already struggling on offense with those already on the team & don't have much incoming talent as of now while our best WR & Arnold just bolted. We aren't replacing a guy like Nic Anderson through the portal. I've seen one parent (of a player) on SM blame the medical staff/trainers directly referencing this.
I'll also add that Venables has always touted his integrity and asked committed recruits not to take visits. Then, he basically pulled the scholarship offers from two long-time commitments just a couple days before "signing day." It's hypocritical and disappointing. Venables just needs to quit talking about morals and doing the right thing if he can't walk the walk.
His freshman #'s were off the charts- better than Ceedee & other notable OU greats. Granted he's gotta be healthy but point being the parent is pointing finger at the medical staff. I know other people have certainly speculated we may have a more significant underlying issue with respect to strength & conditioning. This is kinda along those same lines.
I'm more concerned about the general direction of everything on offense and how bad things really are behind the scenes to even get to this point or have a season like we just had. So far we are not off to a great start in the off season is all I'm saying. We did get Fasusi but that's about the only highlight thus far with several negatives on offense.
I think it is more unlikely that Anderson will stay healthy next year. He has played half a dozen games in two years and will be coming off a torn quad. Keep in mind that his brother was always hurt. The bigger gamble is giving him several hundred thousands in NIL and rely on him next year. For the money Anderson is going to want, you can probably get 2 or 3 solid/very good receivers.
The ranking of the recruiting class doesn't matter as much as many people want it to. For two reasons. First, there are 4 and 5 star recruits that bust. And there are 2 and 3 star guys that end up being really good. It's always been this way. And second, in this day of commitment being a thing of the past, you don't really know if the incoming freshman signees will ever play here.
So, we HAVE to make a bunch of major wins in the upcoming portal if we're going to turn the program in a positive direction.
Anyone know how the money from the House settlement is going to work next year? Seems to me that we're gonna have $20 million we have to spread around to 95 players, which looks like $210,000 each, on average? Anyone know how NIL figures into all that?
Michael Hawkins has had a chance to sit and watch. He'll continue to be a good competitor regardless of any QB who transfers to OU thru the portal.
Eighteen true freshman recruits...
Mateer 6'1" - 219 is awesome, fast, doesn't hesitate to make a decision. IMO he is underrated . . .
Yea.. I think it's more likely that those WR's were actually healthy & just didn't want to play. At least that's the speculation from many, they were all probably just waiting to hit the portal and didn't want to risk anything further heading into free agency. I hope that isn't true and all these guys didn't just quit the team early on this year once they realized how bad we were but then again that might just be the NIL world we live in now.
I was under the impression that the WRs were staying (guess that was wrong) and that's why they 2 WR flipped, they didn't want to gray shirt. The player count reduction is also affecting us (and everyone).
I don't think any of them have announced yet other than Anderson, hopefully it's just speculation and they are staying. But at same time it kinda makes sense if they don't.
Exactly. They are free agents every year and there are no standard structured contracts or collectively bargained deals. So, the portal means as much or more than high school players. And if any of those freshman are good, but not quite able to break into the rotation in year 1, then you have to be prepared to pay them more to not play than some other school will pay them to play.
It's a reboot every year now, even for really good programs. Investing in experienced college players through the portal is usually going to net a better return than not-quite-ready to start high schoolers who are just as likely to leave as they are to stay once they are ready to start.
UNLV and SMU as well?
We're going through a rough patch in college football. I think the next evolution of the NIL will be multiyear contracts for NIL athletes. The pendulum has been on the side of the schools for a loooong time, and as things go, it has now swung as far in the opposite direction it can go. Equilibrium will be found, but it may take some congressional action because of the whole anti-trust angle.
I believe the ~$20 million figure is spread across the whole athletics department, although I would imagine the majority of the compensation will be steered towards the athletes that generate most of the revenue (i.e., football, men's basketball, softball).
I don't see the NIL collective (1Oklahoma) going away. it, along with other sources of NIL, will co-exist with the revenue promised to athletes under the House settlement.
