The late Jerry Lordan wrote "Apache"; Bert Weedon cut it first, but the big hit went to the Shadows -- Lordan apparently played it for Jet Harris, who thought it was wonderful. (A solo version by Jorgen Ingmann and several overdubs was the Stateside hit.)

Still, the version you've heard most is probably the 1973 remake by The Incredible Bongo Band, which was never a hit, but which was sampled in many later recordings.
