French Revolution on NW Expwy. . .
China Coast - That was an attempt at a national Chinese restaurant chain by the General Mills Restaurants Inc., the same ones that owns Olive Garden and Red Lobster and was later spun off as Darden Restaurants, Inc., they also own Bahama Breeze and Smokey Bones. They closed all of them down and gave up on the concept, I guess it was just too hard to compete against locals at that time.
Here's an old article about it: Bnet - General Mills unveils China Coast concept
No, the place they were talking about was called China Court, and it was locally owned. The owner decided to get out of the restaurant business to focus on his rental houses and spend more time with his family.
I do miss the place, though. They had the best Kung Pao Chicken I've found.
Dudes,
The Golden Pheasant, on N. May Ave. and across the street from
NW Classen High School!
Also, China House! When the city decided to work on the 39th Expressway,
they wouldn't make China House accessible to the public. It went out of
business because of utter stupidity.
Oy!
I'm only think out loud...
Has anybody eaten at Ingrid's Kitchen on NW 36th and N Youngs? It's not
the best German food I've ever eaten but I like it. The music on Saturday
afternoons is scads of fun. Many of the old timers will show up to dance or
listen. I've play with these guys and have had a tremendous time with
them. I'm a bassist - acoustic not electric.
If you happen by, come to the band stand and talk to the bass player. It's
most likely going to be me! Jes' say, "is y'all Pruner?". I'll deny it and we'll
take it from there!
Saturday's from 12-2pm.
I thought of a couple of more...
Sirloin Stockade
Billie Lee Pies
Bonanza
Pick's Fine Foods
Dodson's Cafeteria
Roy Rogers
Queen Anne's Cafeteria
Hey SoonerQueen, I haven't thought of Billie Lee Pies for a long time.
I think we have a pie pan from that place!
Was it on SW 29th and May, just east of May on the north side of the
street? Or was it on NW 23rd street just east of Western? I remember
Billie Lee's but I'm certain of the location.
HELP!
Did they have prune-cream pies?
It was on NW 23rd east of Classen. I loved that place. As far as the China House, the original China House was located at the Lakeside Shopping Center. They had the best food.
Do you mean between Classen and Western? I'm thinking that Billie Lee's was
just east of Western, but I'm old.
Lakeside Shopping Center? Are you thinking of the place at the end of
the center next to Firestone? That's an old restaurant.
I'm thinking of the Chinese restaurant just west of Pennsylvania on the north
service road. It's been several things since @ 1980. Now that I think about
it, China House may have not been the name of the place. In fact I know it
wasn't!
Hang loose, I've almost got it!
HOUSE OF CHAN!
I knew I'd remember it!
Do you remember how Chinese restaurants used to serve warm rye bread
while you waited for your Chop Suey?
AWESOME!
I only ate at House of Chan once in my life and it was when we first moved here in '54 (I was 12). Years later as an adult, I decided I should go again just once but with I-44 there by then it was hard to get to and before I ever got around to it it closed. Here is my memory of the place from over 50 years ago. Instead of the overly colorful and decorative interiors or Chinese restarants of today, it was more like a Frank Lloyd Wright interior. Is my memory correct and does anyone have any pictures of the interior?
Don't mean to hijack the thread, sorry.
There is a Sirloin Stockade in the Austin area on I-35 near Round Rock, sadly it is nothing more than a Golden Corral clone now.
There are still some Roy Rogers restaurants back east, it was one of my favorite fast food places. I frequented the one on 39th and the one in Norman when I was at OU.
There was also Underwoods on SW 59th
Ouy Lin's was another Chinese restaurant that closed several years ago. Until
the last few years, the food was great. Like House of Chan, they served
everything from silver covered dishes.
I know this sounds odd but in the Shawnee Mall about ten years ago there was the damned best corn dog joint. They deep fried your corn dogs fresh right in front of you and the batter was delicious. Better than I ever get at the state fair. They switched management after a few years and they moved to a pre-cooked kind of thing...
kodiak, which is now a bank. while not a restaurant, sportsmans paradise on memorial is closing.
