Many businesses suffer from temporary inconvenience and loss of business during construction projects. Reno might want to talk to businesses located along I35 who were affected when it was being it was being expanded from four to six lanes. It's not easy but he will benefit greatly in the long run.

Do you know why I came to America?

"Public schools, the health care system, giant water parks. The same reason anyone comes to America."

I don't know about the water park being built in OKC, but I know ground just broke for a new water park at Andy Aligator's, in between Norman and Moore on Indian Hills Rd. The Norman Transcript stated that an individual donated $4 million, which is just over half the projected cost. The paper also states that this water park will be the largest water themed park in all of Oklahoma and Kansas.

Pretty impressive for an amusement venue in these economic times. Sounds nice.

Actually the paper states that it will have the largest aquatic play structure, not that it will be the largest water park in OK and KS. WWB will still be larger by a fair amount. Also, it's a 4.2 million dollar investment, and not funded by any individual donations. The Andy Alligator's park will be a great size for Norman, but it's not quite a regional attraction.

That is not correct!! The paper did not say the largest "play structure," it said the park, as a whole, will be the largest. I have the paper right here, and yes a a local individual did fund the money. he owns a local bank. The video said that the play area is the largest in the state, but the paper doesn't mention a play area at all.

Quality of Life.. you may lose out on a pool as far as money goes, but that money is more than made up for when you improve the quality of life, more people want to be here. The more that are here, the more sales tax, etc... more tax income, not an increase in taxes don't get that wrong, but the amount collected is more simply for the fact that there are more people. Imagine if we were double our population size.. we well could be on MAPS5! Imagine that quality of life.

Hmm, sounds like we may be getting our water parks confused. I thought the online article might be the same as what you were looking at. Besides the Andy Alligator park, I've heard of at least one other small "community water park" being built in the area that would have some sort of assortment of small slides and nick-nacks. It would make much more sense if an individual was contributing to a community park rather than the privately owned Andy Alligators. Never the less, if his $4 million dollar donation was indeed over half the project cost, it would still be no-where near the largest water park in the state. To get bigger than WWB I would think you'd need at least $30-40 million, and you'd have to know how to spend it.

It could also just be a misprint, the local papers hardly even try to get their facts straight anymore.

Could you post a scan/photo of the article?

Default Northeast Regional Health and Wellness Campus

$6.5 million building permit for the 37,000 square foot office building today. It will house the Oklahoma City & County Department of Health Regional Center and other services.

Northeast Regional Health and Wellness Campus Signals a New Era in Public Health Improvement

On October 24th, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, County Commission Chairman Willa Johnson, County Commissioner Ray Vaughn and other community leaders joined the Oklahoma City-County Health Department OCCHD and Wellness Now in breaking ground on a new Health and Wellness Campus in NE Oklahoma City.

The project represents far more than a new building that will deliver public health services: it marks a major, innovative shift in approach to improving community health. The Wellness Campus will offer a central location for activities aimed at reducing chronic diseases by focusing on programs that encourage people to become leaner, more active, nutritionally aware and health conscious.

“The Health and Wellness Campus has the potential to become a national model for community health improvement,” says OCCHD director Gary Cox. “This will be a center where people will find services to address their current health needs, as well as education and activities that can help to prevent the chronic diseases that have plagued our community.”

Obesity and tobacco use in Oklahoma top the list of contributors to poor health status. Oklahomans suffer some of the highest rates of diabetes and heart disease in the nation as a result. “With help from our partners, we’ll be concentrating on those factors, as well as child and senior health,” Cox says.

The 54 acre Wellness Campus will include clinical services provided by OU Medical Center. The concept will merge primary care with public health and education programs. The Police Athletic League will offer after-school programs for children. The Areawide Aging Agency will provide health and longevity activities for seniors. A community kitchen will be available for cooking and nutrition classes.

Community gardens will be designed to educate children and adults about the value of fresh, local produce and good nutrition. Walking trails around the perimeter of the property along the Deep Fork River will eventually link with Oklahoma City’s master trails network. Youth sports fields are also planned. OCCHD expects to complete initial construction by the fall of 2012.
