That was Dairy Boy (one of the first)! At that time it was owned by Hansen/Atlee Dairy on South Penn about the 1900 block. Leonard Hansen and Harry Atlee are both dead now. The other eatery was the Burger Bar in Grant Square shopping center. Do you remember the Red Barn restaurant close to the old RX at about 53rd and Penn, great big Red Barn shaped building with white trim. Only there about one year......

The age you said your sisters were...Ask them if they remember having to wear a potato sack dress to be initiated into the Pep Club? Ask them for some of the things that were required to get in the pep club....Or what all happened when Mr. Coffelt and Mr. marker came to Grant?....How about Mr. Hess or Mr. Norris...can anyone tell what Norris taught besides FOOTBALL??? and what was his first name?
Crappiehead:............Remember Cha-Cha-Cha?...............How about when the Cherry Bombs were flushed down the commode from the second floor to the first?
Yeah, it worked Semrad was NOT a happy Camper............
See ya next time:....................
Every red blooded southsider remembers Capitol Hill Ice Cream on S.W. 29th, do any of you remember the Capitol Hill Drive in on the corner of S.E. corner of 29th & South Robinson with the dirt parking lot, and what was on the N.E. corner of the same location!! Waiting for an answer......The Drive-In became car lots years later and now has been sold to Auto Zone which is under construction.......
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Remember Capitol Hill Ice Cream very well...Ammonia Chiller and all...(do you know what an ammonia chiller is?
2. On the North East Corner there was everything from a pool Hall (Snooker hall) to a brothel..... One of the guys who furnished the pony rides in the front of the stores had his warehouse there until he bought the building on 29/Harvey...McInnis medical center was behind there right on 29th until they built their new building on 45th & Pennsylvania. Dr. Rozin left Opper for a while and that was where he was for a while.
What was there that you were thinking about? My sister was a graduate of '61 from Grant and she and I were pretty close so, I was going just about everywhere she went unless she was going on a date....How about Jerry Husted?? If you remember Norwood, where did he go from Grant??...His first name was Tracy which was unusual for a man in that day.....
See ya next time:..........................
Yes, the ammonia chillers work on the same theory as a modern day condensing unit, but what your referring to is what they used to keep their cream and ice cream cool, also put out an unusual oder, very distinct. The Pool Hall was the most lucrative business I remember being there and yes I knew Dr. Rosin and dated Opper's daughter a few time's and can't even remember her name. Opper was also at 29th and S. Western next door to Ellis Hudson's (Frank Hudson's Dad) Pharmacy. His partner at that time was Woody Olson who was my doctor for a period of time. I'm sure Opper is dead, I know Woody Olson is dead and I read where Rosin (who was also my Dr.) past away about 3 or 4 years ago. Rozin worked up until the day he died at a Southeast Altheimers (spelling) unit at about 35th and Harvey. It was called Southeast something. Mauldin, Yates and Wheeler bought the corner across from Grant where the old Dairy Boy was and rented a small part to a Dentist and Miral Parker of Parker Prescription Shop which is still operating there. I remember Norwood went on to another school but forgot which one it was.
Seems as thouch this guy answered my questions to you probably better than I could have. I remember the place as being a house of ill repute and that's about it.
Hey Generals64, thanks for the private message. The name is correct!
Leonard if alive would be well into his nineties, I did read where he died and we both use the same CPA. Maybe there is a mistake but it was made by both the Daily Oklahoman and his CPA. Could there be a Jr.? Leonard's big deal was to buy the Tivoli Inn in Downtown OKC before urban renewal and remodel it and so forth. Apartments were his thing. Are we talking about the same guy who would be in his nineties? I'm not above making mistakes. Please let me know...
"Old-Timer's" disease comes and goes....right now, it's gone for a while...I can remember selling roses on the street corners when I was in Jr. High. These "Hustlers" would get kids to stay out ALL DAY on Saturday selling roses and they would pay us a percentage of what we sold. Well, I convinced them to let me go last on the corner I would get.... so, when everyone else was out of the truck and set up (8th grader) i talked the guy into giving me ALL of the roses that were left to sell but, i wanted to go Northside...He didn't know OKC so he agreed...I had him take me to Casady Square and set up up my tent. When he left, I marked the roses Double for a couple of hours then had a half-price sell (original price) and sold out in about 2 hours.....Made about 30-35 dollars that day.....big money in 1959......
Do you remember the Blue wall plaques you could order from the comic books? I order a set ( though my mom was going to kill me) and they cost 13 cents each...you were to sell them for .35 cents or 3/ 1.00. Since no one else was welling them anywhere I marked mine .50 cents or 3/1.00. Sold the first order in one day. I doubled my order and went to work. There were "Jesus Loves me all over the neighborhood" (at 50 cents). Made close to $100.00 on those... that was really BIG Money.
Did any of you guys hand out hand bills?. I made a deal with Bob Poole to put handbills out from 36th st. to 51st. from Agnew to Independence. I hired other kids to hand them out and starting doing mine...I was almost through with my area when Bob pulled up and took me to where the other kids had thrown their handbills in the creek. I handed out handbills til 1:00 a.m. that night....Never did like having employees.....
Generals64 Forget what I said about your messages not coming through. The problem was some of my fine computer skill's or lack there of!! First of all "Toni" hasn't forgot you and wanted to tell you "Hi." Maybe you would like to let your wife read this one. I went to Grant 3 years and Capital Hill 3 years, but not in any order, just back and forth. My Mom moved a lot. How are Patsy, Debbie and of course Kay?
Hey guys.....I thought I was going to get to come to Coit's tomorrow and bring some of my SE Spartan friends as backup (HA!!).....but something came up and we won't be able to attend. I hate that, I was looking forward to meeting you.....maybe I'll make the next one.
Keep those southside memories coming!!!
Hey everyone! I won't be able to come either; two of my good friends lost their father, so I will be at a funeral in Mustang.
Ah...Coit's...I've bought enough #14s with cheese to own the place.
