Thread: Oklahoma City, In the Press

As income averages increase, frequently you'll see housing prices increase, which causes increases in property taxes and insurance. Higher average income doesn't always lead to higher disposable income. For example, the average cost of a house in Seattle was 3x that of OKC the last time I checked, and their average income wasn't even double ours. It would be nice to see higher education levels though.

MSNBC ranked Oklahoma the second worst state to live in in the U.S.

I have serious qualms with this thought. I haven't checked all the statistics, but among the worst for air quality? Pardon my french, but I call bull****. We're one of the largest cities in compliance with the Clean Air Act and our air quality problems pale in comparison to almost the entire eastern half of the country.

I question the criteria used. Tennessee for instance should in no way be the worst.

Good thing I don't pay attention to MSNBC anyway.

Most likely the same things are bringing OK down - bad health, lots of smokers, lots of obesity, not much in place to help the health problems, low median pay, bad education, bad roads, ad nauseum. This pops up about annually, and we never get above the bottom 10% for quality of life issues, haven't in probably decades, might never....

You're forgetting MSNBC are the same folks who rated Edmond the best suburb in the the US.... more BS....

As much as I love Edmond, it is no way shape or form, anywhere near the best suburb in the US.... suburbs in OKC suck.

These rankings make good talking points.

Many people in Oklahoma City grow their own fruits and vegetables; is there anyway you can account for this?

Oklahoma's pollution isn't that bad; how do we factor or account for what's blowing into areas like Oklahoma City (in EPA compliance) from 200 miles away like the Dallas area?

You have to take caution in assessing certain areas because some will require more input mechanism to obtain a true picture than others.

As far as the scope of the research; you can only base it on the criteria you use. Some research is related to someone working on a Ph.D, where in some cases:

You learn more and more about less and less until you've learned all there is to know about nothing.

Agree, especially Charlotte. I am also surprised Memphis was on it. By most accounts its a stagnant city that really isn't going anywhere right now.

Not purely about OKC, and this is not the most serious ranking, but Oklahoma has been ranked the #1 state where life is most like a country song (cue: bchris' despair). I got a good laugh at the whole thing and found it clever.

Wallethub has released rankings of the Top 100 cities for recreation, with OKC ranking at 54th. While in the middle of the pack, this listing ranked us higher than Chicago, Memphis, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, NYC, and Houston.

Best & Worst Cities for Recreation | WalletHub®

Personally, I am not a huge fan of the methodology they used, as I examined the criteria in the context of my hometown (Jersey City) which was ranked in 95th place which I disagree with immensely. Somehow they "rated" the weather in Jersey City at 61st but Newark, literally right next to Jersey City, got a ranking of 95th -- totally ludicrous. I think the "parks per capita" is overly simplistic and a lot of this focused on the cost of certain things -- food, drinks, and the number of coffee shops in an area... tennis courts per capita... PRICE OF BOWLING...

Anyway, a list is a list, but I thought this was at least somewhat positive press for the recreation scene here in OKC (which I think is great) despite what the general public's notions may be.

What a great piece. The NY Times has featured some great articles on OKC's revival over the past few years, more so than most any other paper.

It's interesting that the papers from mid size cities still take occasional (and usually uninformed) swipes at us, but the largest paper in the greatest U.S. city routinely gives us props. I think it is because smaller cities tend to be less secure in their stature/status, and are always looking over their collective shoulders to see who might be catching up or passing them. New York is afraid of nobody.
