Thread: Southside OKC Memories....anyone?

  1. Default Re: Southside OKC Memories....anyone?

My memory of Agnew is much better from 25th south than it is from 25th north. I remember Whitten's Grocery on about 23rd. Sam's, the barber college, the dry cleaners which is still there on the NW corner at 25th, Southwest Electri south of the cleaners is also still there. I have a pretty good memory of packing town as we called it. Going to Cattleman's after church on Sunday mornings. My memory is pretty limited between packing town and 25th though except the few I mentioned above. Oh, I remember that there was a welding shop on the east side of the street somewhere along there I think it was called Pat's.
I had forgotton about the Dairy Freeze, that later became Jim's fried chicken for awhile. Dairy Queen was on the NE corner of 26th & Agnew while a laundromat was on the SE corner in a little strip then the Gulf station was south of that strip. I don't remember the Theater being a restaurant until Harley World put one in there. I do remember it being one of the roughest bars in town when it was the Longbranch Saloon. Where was Ellen's Grill? I don't remember that. Geno's Restaurant was between 26th and 27th on the west side of the street. I only remember skating at the skating rink a few times. I remember I had some hand me down skates from one of my brother's that had wooden wheels that didn't work real well on the wood floor of the rink. Skate - A - Rama was open by the time I was skating a lot. I had my 10th birthday party at Skate - A - Rama, still have photos. There was a UTOTEM on the NW corner at 29th south of the carpet store. It seems like there was a bar on the SW corner a little cafe on the SE corner and I can't recall what it was on the NE corner. Agnew hardware was on the east side of the street between 27th and 28th right?

All right Kiddo:....I remember the Agnew Theater very well, the theater was being remodeled in about '58 (as printed) and just before a reopening it was vandalized so bad that the owners just hung it up. This was to have been the nicest southside theater in OKC. The Knob Hill in Capitol Hill kinda took that title after that. The building sat vacant for quite some time however then, The Scene came about and the rest is history. I remember skating at the Agnew Skating Rink....(Carpet store now) and at the Dairy Freeze that was between the theater and the Skating rink. I think it's a taco stand now. I remember Agnew Hardware even to not not long ago. They always had what you wanted as well as what you needed.....The auction on that store was Sad....Ellen's Grille was just north of the Theater....I havae gone up and down Agnew so many times in my life....Cattlemen's Restaurant is still one of my favorite places....The old Agnew Rexall Drug Store and don't forget Tener's was across the street....Hats, boots and Gloves.....that was all they sold. Ray Tener and my Grandfather were friends from way back....two true horse traders......

The Agnew Theater was closed in 1958 and in later years became a restaurant."

When I first starting working at the hardware store in about '69 it was Maddy's Hardware owned by C.W. Maddy who lived off of Agnew and about 30th or 31st. It was my first job afterschool and summers. Across the street was the Scene. Some of you might have known Jan his daughter or Bob, the son who basically ran the store. We ate lunch most days at Geno's or The Round-Up. Great place to work for a highschool kid.

The Round Up! That was the cafe on the SW corner of 29th & Agnew. Man, I gave myself a headache trying to remember that. I raced homing pigeons when I was a kid and stole er, uh, found most of the scraps that i built my loft out of behind that store.

Well, my goodness!!! Glad to see you on this forum. If you've been reading all the past posts on this thread, you've been behind the computer screen for hours and hours...haha!!! You should come to the Coit's meetings and meet the faces behind all these screen names. Good bunch of people with lots of old memories stuffed up in their head!!! BTW, I won't be at the September 18th meeting, I'll be out of town that day. Don't know how those boys will act with "mom" not there to keep them in line!!

you're pretty close...On the S.W. corner of 29th & Agnew there was a smal strip shopping area. In 1964 backwards there were three stores...Tag Agency/TG&Y/and a Drug Store. Just to the east of them was a small cafe...I want to say it was Shipman's at one time. On the S.W. Corner there was an on and off again cafe.....on the N.W. corner a small convenient store. But, it wasn't there until they quit the Skating Rink. Ellen's was just south of Geno's...a little diner. The Agnew hardware store was on about 23rd and Agnew and the building is a "Junk" store now. My grand dad's "girlfriend" use to live right across the street from The Agnew Theater/Harley world....

Ok, my brain really hurts now. I do remember a hardware store north of 25th. So that was Agnew hardware? What was that between 27th and 28th on the east side of the street then? They had lumber racks behind it ( I was told, wink). I don't remember anything between Geno's and the Dairy Freeze. So there was a TG&Y on the SW corner of 29th and Agnew? I guess that was before Economy Square. I know there was a TG&Y in the little center @29th & Kentucky next to Humpty Dumpty. My brother had a little used furniture store on the southside of 29th between Agnew and Youngs for awhile. I remember a little cafe on one of the south corners of 29th & Agnew that I think was called the Big Red Cafe. Really I've got a headache now.

================================================== ================================================== ======================O.K., the TG&Y on Agnew was closed in August of 1964. That was when the Economy Square center was built. The LAST store manager there was John Robinette. He went on to Economy square. Mac's Tag Agency started there....they have been on the southside forever. Geno's building is still standing but, I think the old diner building is torn down....It was just across the street south from Geno's. Where you are talking about racks in the back has always been a used store bargain center. It is still there....If you go north of the old Barber college about 100 yards there is an old building there for antiques??? that was the Agnew Hardware store....go down a way and on the West side of the street was Sam's Surplus. Sam Goldstein owned that until he died. His two sons run it now and they sell alot of work clothes and some school uniforms...Sam always had a large assortment of Army Surplus....Most of the older guys on this thread probably got their first (non-issued) army helmet there....

The State Barber College. They specialized in scalping. Can't
tell you how many times we left with our ears and neck scratched.

It was cheap, though. We ended up going to Stewart's on

I was only 3 in 1964 that's why I don't remember the TG&Y on Agnew. The Hardware thing is driving me crazy. My much older brother thinks that Agnew hardware was the one I'm thinking of between 27th & 28th.It was Across from the Scene and next door to Darrell's Bicycle shop. He thinks the one that you're thinking of north of the barber college was called Drive-In Hardware. Maybe OSU Cowboy could help us. He said he worked there.

Young one? haha! someone should tell that to my knees, back, shoulders etc. My wife and I have a combined 5 kids. The YOUNGEST of which just started college this year. Not to mention the two grandkids. No not young but I do still have control of most bodily functions.

This may be a little off topic for this thread but I guess being there could bring back some memories. Is anyone going to the SE vs. Grant game tomorrow night? I drove by USG a couple of days ago while they were practicing. It looked like they had quite a few more kids out than I've seen in recent years. Still had the urge to go buy some blue paint and...well you know what Spartans do with blue paint at USG.
My junior year at SE we had t-shirts made that said 100% SPARTAN on the front and I'D RATHER BE DEAD THAN A GENERAL IN RED on the back. For some reason I kept that shirt and still have it. My oldest step daughter (class of 2000) wore it to her 10th reunion this summer and she was a huge hit. Some things will never change.

You can't get an alum from either school to attend a sporting event.

I know that I am replying to an old post here but Denny was drafted by the Royals and I think he may have made made it as far as their AAA team in Omaha. He worked on the dock at LeeWay in the off season. Once I remember watching Darrell in a playoff game on TV, he had a pretty bad season that year and one of the announcers started talking about the Royals trading Darrell and bringing Denny up. I don't really know what happened to Denny's career. Jimmy was my freshman science teacher at SE and I sold cars with Eddie for a time.

Darrell signed with the Brewers out of high school in 1970, then later went to KC, St. Louis, and Texas. He was the MVP of the 1982 World Series. He did not commit suicide. He died on Aug. 5, 2002, when his heart stopped due to "excited delirium". I don't remember any of the other three Porter boys being drafted in the minors. Eddy went on to play football at East Central and Denny played baseball for Central State.

Their mother, Mae Porter, died at the end of October last year, and father, Ray, died less than 2 months later right before Christmas. I attended both funerals.

I never knew that about Denny... interesting. That's why we like newbies on this forum... they read all our old posts and give us new information we didn't know or just add their own 2 cents to our comments. Love it!!!!!

The store between 27th and 28th (eastside) that I worked at was Maddy's as I said but we weren't a traditional hardware store. We sold freight damaged appliances, lumber, etc
The racks out back held lumber at the time I worked there. We sold carpet too. Maddy had a deal with Santa Fe rail and we would buy freight damaged goods but we would have to go pick them up off the railcar wherever they ended up after the load had shifted, etc whatever had caused the goods to be damaged. Our biggest draw were the appliances that might have a dent or chipped paint, etc. I have no idea how long he was there after I left in 70 or 71. Maddy also leased the warehouse type building behind the western wear place north of the bank, 12th or 13th maybe?
