Hey, when you are kinda stoved up you have time to think and with Loritabs you think some really weird things...But I remember the "Fights" that would go on on the South Side....You won or you lost...You stayed mad but you got over it....Now you can get "Lead Poisoning" and you are gone either boy or girl. I remember a few Ball bats drug out but the only thing that would get hit would be a car or the ground...you didn't REALLY want to "Kill" someone...you might go to lunch with them the next day....The guy in Edmond that accidentally went to sleep in an elementary school parking lot with 17 loaded guns and 12 knives and 1300 rounds of ammunition....Not real smart.....then the kid at the Edmond middle school threatened a girl (bigger than he was) with a knife...Once again Not real smart.....I have carried a knife since I was about 6 years old....I guess I was gonna skin a "Bar" or something....My birthday present from my grandfather when I was Three was a ,22 single shot....Knew better than to threaten anyone with it....And definitely don't take it to school...Remember the southside???

I think most of the boys carried knives, especially in elementary school. You
got it when you could show that you knew how to handle it. It was a rite of
passage. A teacher wouldn't think twice about it. We played mumbly peg or
threw them into the ground.

I never took a gun to school, well maybe for show and tell once.

I went to Arthur with the first group of kids to go there. I was in the 2nd grade at the time. My Sister was a 5th grader and we (along with all the other kids) thought we owned that part of OKC. Did your sister (1963 Graduate) go to Arthur also? First principal was Mr. Lawter.....He was a bugler on the USS Oklahoma.....Wasn't on the ship when it was sunk...Then Mr. Hoggard then I was outta there.....The school hasn't changed a bit.....I can still remember "hitch hiking" up and down Independence to get to school or to the movies at Airline Shopping Center......Never a worry.....I'd have a stroke if one of my Grandsons tried that now.....

I went to McKinley elementary in the late 60's - early 70's and Z.H. Lawter was the principal during my tenure. A cousin of mine is friends with his niece.

I don't know how many of you are Facebookers, but someone recently started a FB page you might find interesting - "Heck Yeah, I grew up in South OKC! (I-240 area)". Lots of southside memories. You may find some old friends.

Harvey's was the drug store I remember. I also remember Stockton's Grocery store - and when Rudy's moved into the location.

I don't, but have some old pics of Commerce at home I'll look at.
My sister graduated in '54 from CHHS and doesn't remember brick and she rode a horse in a parade down it for the rodeo deal back then but she said it could of been brick at one point.
