Thread: Cutting the COX Cable cord.....

  1. Default Re: Cutting the COX Cable cord.....

Cox bill with phone, cable and Net is bundled currently and close to $200. We also have Chromecast, will that work? Does Playstation Vue include a DVR-type component? So cancel the bundle, but upgrade our Internet service because that will improve the viewing experience?

    1) Edit: Chromecast does work now. You just have to sign up and start it all on a PC first. From another forum: "Iphone or Android it doesn't matter, you need to first establish your profile and home location using a PC or TV-Connected device, then once that is done you'll be able to access the PS Vue app on your iPhone which supports casting to chromecast from iOS, but only REAL Chromecasts, not TV's or other boxes with built in cast support, they broke that somehow (unless it's been fixed in the last 2 months since the last time someone mentioned it)."

    2) It has a cloud DVR

    3) Yes you want high end internet to stream higher quality.

I just signed up for Uverse, and a TV/Internet package with all sports channels and up to 3 receivers is $110/month. This is a promotional rate, but it runs for 2 years and your contract is only 1 year. It was a lot better deal than anything I could find on Cox.

What's the Internet speed now with Uverse? I can't go any lower than the 150MB I have with COX.

People need to keep in mind that most of us use wifi in our houses and your speed will be cut even more when utilizing wifi. I had to directly connect my computers and home security cameras to maintain speeds even close to what I am paying for.

This is a HUGE point - you can have the fastest internet-to-ISP access in the world, but your "on-premise" performance is going to be constrained to the slowest device in the chain, and that's gonna be wi-fi. And that's going to be further complicated by the proliferation of devices that don't even offer a hardwired option. I want to push performance as hard as I realistically can, meaning I want hard connections...finicky wifi setups can be the cause of all kinds of problems, especially with so many devices competing for the same bandwidth.

Depends if your area has ATT Fiber, but if so 1000Mbps.

So we stream You Tube videos from a Chromebook via Chromecast over Wifi at our current Internet speeds (sorry don't know what they are) and generally the video quality is fine. If the quality in that scenario is acceptable, will it be the case do you think with live streaming via PS Vue for, say, sporting events?

We have a real Chromecast and use it via an older (2.5 yrs.) Chromebook--can that device be used to sign up and start it all? Also, does PS Vue have a free trial period to see how you like it?

You can get an ethernet adapter now for Chromecast to hardwire it to your router.

Unfortunately they are not physically close enough in our case to do that.

Any options on having a better router with an ATT U-verse modem/router? What they provide is absolute crap.

We just dropped cox cable and added PS Vue on an Amazon Fire TV, which is pretty great so far. There is a free trial period. I'd recommend giving a PS Vue a try and using an antenna for over-the-air local channels.

    The chromebook can yes.

And they offer 7 day free trial.

I use a setup with something like these - http://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-Ethe.../dp/B008EQ4BQG

I was able to use my existing cable connection to run from my router to my TV. Not sure if something like this would help you out. Obviously, you have to have an available coax connection within reach of your router. There are also ones that use your power lines. They can supposedly transmit at up to 2000Mbps but I have no experience with them.

We cut our DirecTV cable a few months ago now and just have Cox internet and PS Vue. Interesting thing about the Vue, even though we have a PS4 and two Amazon Fire TV's/Sticks we don't really use Vue to watch Live TV at all. We just "record" a few shows but mostly we're just using the service to log into the various apps out there and get instant access to shows and things.

So we're not really leaving the TV on anymore for background noise and more focused on individual shows as a family experience.

Does anyone have any experience with the AT&T Fiber in OKC and if it is truly as fast as it says?

Here's a speedtest I just did on my desktop. I pay for gigabit, but the AT&T guy will call it good if he gets 600

Also possible that the NIC in the desktop is limited at some speed below a gig.

I was paying for a gig until I realized that all of my devices seem to be limited to 100 MB/s or so. So the gig's only merit would be if I had a number of different devices streaming/downloading at the same time.

Also 7200 rpm SATA drive will write at 300-400 Mbps (at best). Even the faster SSDs are 500 Mbps or so. Speedtests are fine for some general idea of how your connection is performing, but they should not be used to ensure you're getting what you're paying for.

All this being said, you're right, a gig connection will only benefit you if you have multiple devices or people using it. Even a 4k UHD stream from netflix uses only about 25 Mbps.

Does ATT have a cap on data? I know Cox is something like 750gb.

I VPN everything so I am not sure how Cox treats data but I use quite a bit and my router always says I use more than the Cox website.

I don't know about their giga plan, but my plan has a 500gb limit on AT&T U-Verse.

Mine says unlimited, but I have it bundled with TV so maybe that's part of the deal. I was told that it would have a 1TB monthly limit if I ever decided to "un-bundle" and go Internet-only.

Anyone know of somewhere I can get info on when gigabit service might be available in my neighborhood? AT&T support is worthless for this.

We signed up with Cox last year when moving into a new office building. Unfortunately the roof leaks, the landlord won't fix it, and after repeated damage to our belongings we were forced to move. Our new office building has internet available to tenants, so I called Cox to cancel our account. They told me that we have a three year contract and they won't let us terminate it early, regardless of the reason. They won't even negotiate a lower price.

At my previous job I had a similar experience. We closed our Norman office and switched to home offices for the in town employees, and we had a little over a year left on our Cox business contract. They're pretty strict about holding you to that.
