Thread: Christmas holiday days off policies

    Just surveying the OKC business landscape to see what kind of time off employers are giving employees around the Christmas holidays, especially with Christmas and New Year's falling on the weekend this year. Besides the official "observed" days off per the government (this year, Dec. 26 and Jan. 2) is the general trend most years to provide any other paid days off or are employees expected to use vacation days for any other time off? Do you find that many offices (that can) simply close down between Christmas and New Year's annually? Just trying to get a feel for HR trends.

    I have the 23rd, 26th, and the 2nd off.

    The bank I work for gives one floating holiday to employees to be used around Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years. Other than that we get the Fed holidays off.

    I work for Sprint Corporate out of Overland Park Kansas.. we have Thanksgiving and Friday after off and for Christmas and new years the 26th and the 2nd.

    Banks cannot be closed for more than 3 consecutive days, so we'll get one day for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, etc. and then are expected to use vacation for the rest. We also do have one floating holiday.

    I also have the 23rd, 26th and the 2nd.

    Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, 12/26, and 1/2

    I work nights and weekends and work for a contractor for the FAA. When holidays fall on weekends they don't count as holidays for us since the Federal observed holiday is put on a Friday or Monday. I am expected to work on those days, but will have the Friday or Monday paid off unless it is my turn to work that day. I work in a IT helpdesk and we are here 24/7 to take calls and monitor a bunch of servers.

    My area is "closed" the day after Thanksgiving, we take leave (or something), but I'll have to have my laptop with me just in case.

    I work for the state. We get 24th through the 27th off.

    Work for Marriott, Thanksgiving is paid and the day after Thanksgiving is paid as well which surprised me when I started 5 years ago. Also Christmas and New Years are paid as well. This is a corporate managed location and not franchised-managed so I can't vouch for other properties. Being in the hospitality business with a hotel open 24/7, some people are still there working though so it's basically double-time for those that work those days.

    I give my staff off Thanksgiving and the day after off. We basically follow the state holiday schedule. With Christmas and New Year's day being on Sunday this year, 1/2 the staff will take Friday and the other 1/2 will take Monday so we are still open but everyone gets the three day weekend.

    That is a really fantastic idea... I bet they are thankful for that!

    I'll report back on Christmas, but for Thanksgiving the place is open the day before and day after. The dept splits between those days.

    OU gets the 23rd - Jan 2 off, but we have to use our own leave for the 29th and 30th.

    Common in the tech world, we're off both Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and then we're off the entire week between Christmas and New Years Day.

    I always loved this. I wonder what happens if people don't have vacation on those days. Do they just not get paid for two days? They definitely don't make you come in.

    I usually take about four days after the second off and make it a two week vacation.

    Yea, you have to take leave without pay or you can use compensatory time (for hourly employees) if you dont have enough leave saved up.

    Not OKC but here's how it works at United in my union.

    All employees will be paid straight time for the holiday regardless if you are scheduled to work or not.

    If you work on the holiday you will also be paid time and a half. So essentially if you work the holiday you get 2.5x pay and if you are scheduled off you receive 1.0.

    We also have a very liberal shift trade policy, if you trade off your shift on a holiday you won't get paid for either the holiday pay or holiday worked pay. For example, I was scheduled to work Thanksgiving but I traded my shift away to someone who did want to work. The person who is working for me will get 2.5x pay and I will not get any pay. If I was scheduled to be off work (my rotating days off happening to fall on the holiday) I would get 1.0 time.
