The first time my mother took us to eat Chinese food was at the House of Chan. My late wife's favorite was Ouy Lin's until we were served shrimp fried rice with bad shrimp. They were very nice, replaced our meals and didn't charge us, but if you have ever had bad shrimp before you will understand that we couldn't go back. They closed about three-four years after that. Steamed rye was a staple in Chinese cooking. I have eaten Chinese in Maryland, Washington, and several other states and they always brought rye in a container with a cloth napkin or a saucer/plate in a cloth napkin. But, I haven't seen it in over twenty years.

on N. Penn and N.W. 11th? How about House of Chan just west
of N. Penn on the service road? I always looked forward the
steamed rye bread and butter.

I ate at House of Chan and Ouy Lin once. I liked them ok. Canton on McArthur used to serve rye bread and butter. I do not know if they still do. Canton is my favorite Chinese restaurant in OKC. It has been owned by the Tse family for 41 years at the same location. It does not look like much on the inside, but their chicken chow mein and eggrolls are my favorite in the 405. Their egg drop soup freaks some people out because it is clear and you can actually see egg in it. It is not the syrupy stuff everyone else serves. The Tse family, who immigrated from Hong Kong in the 1960's, are Cantonese. Canton also has some of the best prices in Oklahoma City.

I eat at the S&B Burger Joint on 9th Street frequently. I eat my own combination of a Mushroom Swiss with regular mayo (Not Chipolte mayo) and a fried egg on top. I enjoy it every time. Some people may be put off by the Rolling Stone covers on the tables and the loud music. I plan on trying the Quail Springs location one of these days. I think it will do well there.

From what I've heard, the Quail location opened up in mid-July and still managed to do better than the other S&B locations in sales for the month of July which is pretty incredible. Granted it's still early, but I think that is a pretty good location for it. They've had a lot of people say that they loved S&B's but the locations were all too far away from them. The Quail location is great for a lot of North OKC and Edmond people to go to.

So far it's been such a cash cow for Shannon and Bryan and their partners, Abacus (I don't think they're called Emerging Brands anymore). Sure it might lose a little bit of its allure of being the hole-in-the-wall funky hamburger joint that the original location was known for, but that is a small price to pay considering the benefits they're getting from it.

A recent article said that they're looking to open one in Lawton now sometime next year. If it's near the base, then they could make a killing there.

Haven't been yet. The quail location is so close. I must try soon. But, how many of you that have been like it more than The Garage? Anyone like it more than Irma's (Irma's original location still ranks as my favorite burger joint).

Irma's is my favorite place, too. If I feel like a burger, the No Name burger is my go-to. I'd put S&B between Irma's and The Garage. But you should definitely try S&B (I like the location on 9th best).

I just really dislike the Garage's set up. I don't Like standing in line at a counter like I'm at a McDonald's. Never heard of No Name burgers.

We ate at the North-side location the other day. Different vibe than the 9th Street location - seemed more "corporate" or reproducible than 9th St. On the recommendation of the waitress, we substituted turkey burgers for their regular patties, and I must say, they were awesome. May be my new go-to on any of their varieties. Lots of spice, onions, peppers, etc. almost like a very flavorful meatloaf. We did not like their fried cheese cubes however. Try the turkey!

"no name" is a burger made with all-natural beef from the no name ranch in wynnewood.

I think it's supposed to be pronounced "Noh Nah-Meh" to give you a subliminal connection with Kobe (Koh-Beh) beef.
That, or provide some sort of vague Native American connection.

I think we are done with the 9th St S&B. Messed up our order today for what must be at least the 5th time (got beef instead of veggie sliders like we ordered). Our friend's beef burger was patently undercooked. She sent it back, we could see the waiter arguing with the kitchen about it - odd thing to do when you have an open kitchen in full view of the entire restaurant. When we did get our food, it was cold. Not even warm, cold. Cold onion rings, anyone? We'l stick with the one on N May from now on, even if it's a longer walk. Maybe it is just a function of restaurants being unable to find quality staff these days. Really too bad.

Ate at the original S&B yesterday and learned a few things:

Way cooler than the one on Quail Springs decor- and soundtrack-wise.
They no longer take KeepItLocalOK cards.
The original one is the only one owned by Shannon and whoever the B is, the rest are apparently franchised/licensed out.
The original one has better service and food than the Quail Springs one.

We're so glad we live in the middle of the city now (Venice) instead of BFE, so many more better dining options available to us.

We did the same and love it! We moved in to the Wileman's Bell Isle from BFE north Edmond where we had a couple acres and LOVE IT. So much closer to all the food and everything else.

I live in that area as well and it's pretty great.

Can get anywhere -- including to friends in Edmond -- in 10-15 minutes.

Plus, close to all the best shopping in OKC. I live less than a mile from the Sam's at I-44 and May and I'm in there all the time because it's so easy. Really looking froward to TJ's and WinCo at 39th & Portland.

Yes! All the above! That Sam's is stellar and I've never really been there when it's busy at all. We think the area is great as well!

We looked in Belle Isle a couple of years ago and found out we were priced out of the area, and actually got a fantastic deal in Venice - $87/sf for an amazing house! And yeah, *so* central to everything, it's incredible (we're a block away from Patty Wagon, both a boon and a curse, lol)...

So if it's Shannon Roper et al expanding S&B, it's interesting that the server said the original is the only truly local one now, sounded like it was someone not really associated with S&B that was doing the expansion...

Yep...the ~1 mile radius centered around I-44 and NW Expressway might be the best location in the city. If OKC gets serious about putting tracks in the ground all the way up to Western/63rd via Classen, then other than immediacy, there wouldn't be much advantage living downtown as opposed to here.

Used to go to that Target when I was a kid back in the 70s/80s, got a lot of stuff from there during our recent move. We are still going to Uptown in the Village, might even be closer to our new place than it was to our old place. Winco will be a nice addition, and we'll absolutely be using TJ's after the initial craziness dies down (shopped there just about every week when we lived in IL).

Because: 1. I was only renting in SoSA; 2. buying down there is ridiculously expensive and 3. I have three big dogs and wanted a large yard.

I'd like to move back downtown at some point but I have to say, I like my house and the area a lot more than I thought I would. You can get anywhere from here super quick; as in Deep Deuce or downtown in 8 minutes. Plus super easy to get north or northwest to see friends and family. And I'm on a 1/3rd of an acre in a completely remodeled house for a very modest amount.

And of course super close to that great Sam's at I-44 & May, Target, Trader Joes and most every bit of good shopping in OKC.
