Thread: "Lilith" with the Oklahoma Philharmonic

  1. Default "Lilith" with the Oklahoma Philharmonic

Well the wife was so very excited when I got her excellent tickets to go see the end of the Philharmonic's pop season Saturday when the highly touted Bebe Neuwirth (aka Lilith from Cheers) was the guest.

I gotta say, it was very forgettable.

For one, Neuwirth didn't even appear until after intermission. Second, her singing wasn't all that great (she kept coughing between songs) and they kept promoting her dancing ability yet she didn't dance at all.

Seems I wasn't alone in my impression as several around us had similar comments.

To make the evening even worse, we gave Tom & Jerry's another try (last time I had lunch there it was terrible). This time was no better, the steaks were a joke - I've had better at half the price from Outback.

    Pretty disappointing Saturday.

Sorry to hear. I thought it was pretty cool that they had Bebe Neuwirth, but it sounds like she was phoning it in.

Maybe she thinks Oklahomans helped to quickly zap her as a co-star in the ONLY short lived Law and Order spin off and it turned into payback night?

How would Oklahomans have anything to do with that?

Maybe she had a sore throat. There is a lot of pollen and mold in the air this time of year, I can certainly understand the coffing I have been having some trouble myself. anyway, give her the benefit of doubt.

Bailjumper...Looks like the Daily Rag had a much different take on Lilith's performance...Thought it may make you feel a little better about it

What a marvelous storyteller Bebe Neuwirth is. Her tales about a second-rate British chanteuse, a murderess who seeks a career in vaudeville and a girl traveling halfway around the world to meet the love of her life are endlessly captivating. Yet, while most storytellers rely on stories or folktales, Neuwirth's medium is song. Backed by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Neuwirth recently took pops audiences on a magical journey through the great musical theater songbook.

Her program explored the careers of three distinct musical talents: longtime Broadway collaborators John Kander and Fred Ebb, and the German-born Kurt Weill. Neuwirth has enjoyed a long and profitable relationship with Kander and Ebb, having starred in (and earning a second Tony Award for) their 1996 revival of "Chicago.”

Her opener, "All That Jazz,” bristled with excitement as she demonstrated the seductive powers of Bob Fosse's unusual choreography. Later, she showed her knack for comedy in "Class,” another "Chicago” showstopper that catalogs society's declining use of manners. Neuwirth was equally persuasive in "A Quiet Thing,” an introspective number from "Flora, the Red Meance” in which the main character expresses surprise that happiness isn't accompanied by trumpets, drums or bells. It "comes in on tiptoes,” Ebb wrote.

Well of course they aren't going to write a bad review.

The Oklahoman is the epitome of an agenda pushing whore. There is no way they would have given her a poor review knowing the wrath they would face.

As someone who put up a decent amount of money to attend, I was less than impressed. The fact she was touted as the star of the show, yet only appeared after intermission is enough to ask for half my money back.
