Thread: FedEx Ground

  1. #1

    Far North FedEx Ground

Federal Express Ground has published plans and are seeking bids to build a massive 269,000 square foot distribution facility near NW 150th and Kelly.

The semi-automated center will sit on 45 acres and will be similar to a facility now underway in Little Rock, Arkansas.

When formally announced, FedEx said the Arkansas facility would create 160 jobs in the area.

Oklahoma City's unemployment rate has edged up to 4.2% due largely to layoffs in the energy section, which is still well below the national average of 4.9%.

According to Cathy O'Connor at the Alliance for Economic Development, FedEX has not approached the City for any sort of incentives.

I ship and receive a lot of packages, and I've always thought FedEx was the worst service available. Even worst than USPS which is saying something. While I'm happy for the more jobs it will bring, I sure hope the City doesn't give them any incentives.

Building new distribution facilities should help make them better. In theory.................

True...I try to stay open minded, I've just had numerous bad experiences with them, so if I have a choice I always pick UPS even if it costs a couple bucks more.

Pete, you say this one is similar to the one in LR. How many facilities are there in the US besides Memphis, of course.

And hopefully they wont come to the city at some point with their hand out. This is something that doesnt need to be incentivized. Central Oklahomans shipping and receiving packages is the incentive. It already makes sense for FedEx to build this, we dont need to give them free money to do so.

    Agreed.

Just an opinion from someone who drives this way daily - the city is going to have to put some work into Lincoln Blvd right there for the additional traffic.

Yeah I was a little baffled by the location choice myself.

I can't immagine what the additional truck traffic will do for the area. Lincoln & Memorial will need improvement, and Kelly between 150th & Broadway Is already beat to hell by the existing truck traffic from the area as it is.

There are tons of these. Got a part time weekend job at the Troutdale, OR location when my hours at my main job were slashed again as soon as I arrived from OKC.

Awful place to work. These are not "good" jobs to have, but are necessary to keep the economy moving. Mainly just minimum wage and minimum hours, most people see how awful it is and quit after a few days or weeks. That's what I did, I thought it would be some decent side money--turned out it was a slave driving job. Not what they advertised during interviews and orientation.

There are tons of these facilities across the country. They are just adding another sorting point to their system, instead of routing packages to Ft. Worth (or wherever the closest facility is) and sending several trucks to OKC everyday. They can skip that process, send some trucks to OKC, unload local packages and sort to other routes as necessary to keep trailers full.

Uhg. This is a good thing. But that kills my.main routes of driving from my house, unless there are some serious road improvements.

I wonder if they pushed to get this approved before the new development impact fees take place. That would actually help this road if they waited.

I guess supporting OU isn't the only thing you are wrong about

(Its just a joke people, calm down)

As far as the number of these facilities, there are a ton of them. Remember that FedEx Ground is completely separate than FedEx Express. FedEx Express is an airline and flies packages around, has just a handful of massive sorting centers, and then a ton of local facilities to distribute packages locally after they are brought in on an airplane. FedEx Ground trucks everything everywhere, so they need a lot of smaller sorting facilities to be efficient. As far as I know, FedEx Express and FedEx Ground will never co-mingle packages.

There is some drainage work going on near the street, but I don't think I have seen much in the way of dirt moving. Not sure if the drainage work is related.

It seems as they've been making improvements to the stream just to the NE of the FedEx parcel.

I noticed the dirt moving too. I would imagine it will take awhile to get it all level and ready. It is a HUGE area they are working on.

You are right, the area is HUGE. I wasn't sure of the zoning for that area, and based on the size, I was wondering about an apartment complex. We live very close to this area, not looking forward to the extra traffic, and especially that added truck traffic.
