Thread: Criterion Concert Hall

I bet they can easily get 3,000+ in that venue.

The main floor gets packed then you have big areas under the overhangs on three sides. And the upstairs risers as well.

Now, for all-seated shows that's different but when you have a popular artist, everyone standing, and the desire to pack as close to the stage as possible, you can get a bunch of people on that main floor.

Did anyone go to the Chapelle show? I saw him when he was at Rose State, and he was hilarious. I've always been a huge fan of his, and was just wondering if he had new material.

Yes... He put on a hilarious, albeit short, set.... Entire show, including the headliner, was one and a half hours.... Dave's set was maybe 45 minutes. Possibly shorter because his DJ took a lot of time between sets to actually bring Dave out on stage.

Saw Ralphie May a couple of nights prior at the Addison Improv and the fat man ran his set right up until the very last second until it was time to start clearing the place out to seat the second show.... Dave was funnier but Ralphie gave a lot more effort.

I saw the second show and Chappelle stayed out much longer than the first one. Like, close to an hour and a half by himself. Show started a bit after 9, opening act did 20-30, some DJ time, but show wasn't over until about 11:30. He was still sharp as hell, but I think the copious booze is what kept him going longer; that and the fact that they weren't needing to turn over the room.

I really wanted to go see Maxwell last night but had a prior engagement. did anyone catch that show?

Porter Robinson announced for Oct 1. Saw him at Lights All Night in Dallas a few years back and he put on a nice set. One of the young up and comers in EDM

Porter and Schoolboy Q, back to back nights here. Going to both!

Yeah that should be a good concert.

I've been kind of disappointed in the concerts there so far. Hopefully they can some day get some of the mid level bands that go on the annual touring circuit.

I was hoping The Criterion would bring in The Jayhawks but they are going to Tulsa instead.

Since this venue is now fully completed, it might be a good time to move the thread to the entertainment area instead since that seems to be the main topic of discussion.

Still very nonplussed by the concert options at this venue. Beginning to think the promoters have zero intentions of pushing any boundaries or booking anything interesting.

Anyone going to Jason Isbell/Lucero next month? I'm looking forward to that one.

Yep.... I'm looking forward to seeing Isbell close for Lucero!

I actually really liked Isbell's work with DBT but I haven't followed him as close since they parted ways.... I've seen Lucero about 6 times in the last year.

What's "pushing the boundaries" in a 3000 capacity venue?

I thought My Morning Jacket and Sturgill Simpson were interesting shows and not acts that would have been here without this venue or this promoter.

If you are into the type of music Isbell does then you will love him. IMO, he is about the best guy out there right now doing what he does. I'm extremely, extremely pumped for this.

I like Lucero a lot, but haven't been really excited by Isbell's new work, but I may end up going. He's playing BOK two days before, so this is a big show to get for the Criterion.

Yeah... I almost pulled the trigger on going to the BOK show but don't really like big arena shows. So I was pretty happy when this show was announced.

I'm kind of in the same boat on Isbell... Some of my favorite Drive-By Truckers songs were the ones he sang on but I've not really gotten into his solo stuff..... I am happy with his success... Especially after this fiasco where The Voice asked him to tryout for their stupid show.... LOL

I'm still thinking that this thread now needs to be moved to the entertainment area instead.

Probably better off keeping this thread (as it can serve as a future archive of the construction of the physical building). But I agree it's better to have a separate thread for the actual events the building hosts now.

I think you're correct so here is a new thread in the appropriate area to discuss concerts at this venue.
