Thread: Walmart

Here is a closer look at one of the plan sheets.

I really think this is for their on-line pick-up service. In another sheet you can see a conveyor system.

I believe they receive the orders, bundle them up, take them in through the receiving overhead door, then use the conveyor system to bring the bundle forward when the car pulls into the drive-thru.

The Mustang Walmart has something like this being built. At first I thought gas station. At a second look it looks like a drive up bank with the tube system that moves things. It makes sense now that it would be pick up. The outside wall next to the are is orange and which is the same color as the pickup area inside. Also, the area in on the other side of the wall is the online pickup.

How could a new built store not seem nice and clean? Or is this new Wal-Mart in an old building?

Interesting how some things don't change over the course of decades. Tubes still being used.

They built air tubes on the Denver airport to send small to medium sized aircraft parts directly to the gate. Not every gate has them, probably every 3rd gate. Good idea in theory, as soon as a mechanic knows what he needs he can radio it in to "stores". They put the part in a box and send it to the closest gate within minutes. A lot of stuff got broken or stuck, so they abandoned that system and went back to the old way of just driving the part from the stores facility to planeside. Interesting concept though.

It is a new building, I stated that because I have walked into places that were new and didn't seem nice. Also there is a lot of dirt and grime associated with construction and if a building wasn't thoroughly cleaned after the construction, it wouldn't be clean. The Natural Grocers store on S 89th and Penn isn't as nice as the Norman or the one on N 70th. It is smaller and harder to find things, not as well organised. And I go to the S 89th store and the Norman store all the time. I just was at the S 89th store, it is more convenient stopping by when I am going to work than the Norman one.

I noticed that the Sam's Club at 39th & May has the "Scan & Go" function, where you use your smartphone to scan items as you shop and place them in your cart, then walk up to the self-checkout and transfer your cart total to the screen, then quickly pay and go.

I know they tested this at Walmarts but not sure this feature is actually implemented at any other local stores. Looking at their website, this appears to be only such Sam's Club in Oklahoma.

Pretty slick. I've been pleasantly surprised by Sam's Club as I expected to miss Costco a lot more.

Cool. I didn't know about that. Just downloaded the app.

After reading more about the Scan & Go concept, it seems they tested it in some Walmarts around the country and decided not to roll it out.

Now, they are doing so in some Sam's Clubs. The one at 39th & May seems to be one of the first to get it.

I really like the idea of seeing exactly what I am going to be charged for something when I scan the barcode, and also that I can see my running total before getting to check out.

And, if you are buying big items which are always hard to deal with in the self check out lanes, this more or less solves that problem because you can just scan them with your phone.

I can see how this would work better in Sam's than Walmart. You have less chance of theft because of the membership model. Someone who is aiming to steal is less likely to buy a membership. Second, they have someone who checks receipts on the way out. While some barely even care what's in the cart and just highlight your receipt, the fact that someone is watching lessens the chance of someone giving it a try.

Yes, and of course at Sam's they check your receipt on the way out so they can double-check it's all been paid for.

Now Hiring signs are up. How long until this location is opened? I may have missed something but it looks like the stop light at the south side entrance is only one sided. Is this possible ?

I think the S Norman one was open within 3 months. they are building a right turn lane on the Westbound lanes, so I am sure once that is done the other light will go up.

It looks like they are completing the service road all the way through to SW 89th and doesn't look like it will be integrated with the on ramp. Will be clusterf***

Jeez, these people have no idea how to do things. This should be done how 240 is with their service roads and Texas turnarounds.

    Agree

Walmart is bad when it comes to your town because it causes mom and pop stores to go out of business. Walmart is bad when it leaves because you have to lay off 3 people and scale back a few services. Is having Walmart in your town good or bad? Make up your mind people...I'm gettin' dizzy here.

It's absolutely both. Walmart coming to town often spells the end of the local Mom 'N Pop grocery and sometimes local hardware stores too - they very often just can't compete, and they go under. Now Walmart is generating the tax revenue that those other stores used to generate. Now what happens when Walmart calls it quits? All of those businesses - Walmart AND the Mom 'N Pops - are now gone, and so is their tax revenue.

Once Walmart is established in a community like that, and the other retailers are driven out of business, it becomes a necessary evil to keep that Walmart open. Even if they realize an increase in net tax revenues while Walmart is there, it's not hard to see why the loss of that store can wreck a lower-population municipality's finances.

If one gave up the neighborhood mom and pop grocery store and got in the convenience store business, then he or she has likely done pretty good.

Some towns have made lemonade out of lemons from the presence of Wal-Mart by putting in strip malls next to Wal-Mart. Then fill the store space with mom and pop type stores. If they offer good or services that Wal-Mart doesn't cover well, or not at all, they probably are doing good.

I noticed there was a permit for Taco Bell that seems to have a similar address to everything else in this area, so I'm wondering if that is the fast food slotted for this area.

Manager(s) at the Newcastle (TriCity) WalMart are apparently telling customers the new location at SW 104th and I44 will not open until October. I'm thinking they are waiting until the service road is completed, because I drive by that building every day on the way home and the building looks 90% finished; parking lot paved, lights up, etc. About the only thing missing is signage.

As far as the service road going from 89th to 104th, at least that road will be new. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the ugly 800lb gorilla in the room will be the abuse upcoming to the horrific little stretch of Portland that becomes the I-44 service road between SW 134th and SW 104th. This is a horrific little stretch of road that has, for about twenty or thirty years, done nothing more than serve the Earlywine golf course, and as such is a pothole-laden, largely unmaintained strip of asphalt. It will instantly become a main route for people coming from the south but choose not to use I-44. I don't think they'll have any choice but to rebuild that entire street in the next year and integrate the I-44 exit there.

I also don't understand why they don't repave 104th under I44. This is ridiculously rough, washboard part of the road.
