Thread: 1613 N. May

  1. #1

    Northwest OKC 1613 N. May

"The Gallows" Bar expected to open mid March, this should be a nice little addition to the area, they will work with the Pizza joint next door to provide food, through a serving window that was added between the two businesses. I believe all they are waiting on is their liquor licenses and they will be ready to open up.

Saw that they were doing some work in there and came here to find out if anyone knew anything - thanks! When we moved to the area last year I thought that would be a nice spot for a bar, especially since this stretch of May between Reno and NW 30th seems to be devoid of any places to grab a beer. A 6 minute walk from the house. Woo!

    There is renovation work inside.

Found traces of the name of the new place being called Lost Highway, but can't find any further details.

I stopped and talked to a guy working on the renovation today. He said it is owned by one of the men who runs the Hi-Lo Club. It will be named "Lost Highway" bar and it WILL allow smoking. I was really hoping it'd be nonsmoking, but I'm glad to get a bar within walking distance nonetheless. The interior is completely renovated and it looks great.

I saw a Petition circulating wanting people to sign to show they would love to support this bar as a Non Smoking bar. I will see if I can find it.

I know the owners. It will never be a non-smoking bar as long as it's allowed.

Gotcha. Well I respect their decision and wish them the best. I'm still pumped that our little section of May Ave. is getting some love!

Yeah...no way this is non-smoking until required by law.

I know no one cares, but as long as it's a smoking bar, i'll stay away.

Again, I'm not a smoker, and I won't regularly be frequenting a smoky place myself, but as long as the activity is legal there is nothing wrong with people having a place to partake in it. Not every single place has to cater to everyone.

+1. I hate this mentality of I disagree therefore the government should ban it! The market will and should decide.

Well I think it goes a bit deeper than just "disagreeing" with it. its a health issue really.. but not going down that rabbit hole once again.
as long as its legal sure bars can have it smoking that's fine and legal.

I don't disagree with smoking laws. I'm just saying that until one exists that absolutely bans smoking inside a business, it is perfectly acceptable that a business exists that caters to the activity.

That's disappointing, but I'll still give the place a try. If it were non-smoking, I'd be there all the time. If it's smoking, I'll walk over there occasionally.

Agreed. The only internal struggle I have with it is employees. The rhetoric is "they have a choice to work in a smoking environment." and that's true. But it's nearly impossible to find non-smoking gigs that pull down the kind of cash tips that a smoking dive bartender makes. So it becomes a choice of pay scale vs health. I bartended full time in college and even though I had quit smoking at that time. I still got a bronchial infection 4 to 5 times a year. My GP started prescribing z-packs over phone after while. But I could pay the rent and utilities(on my half a tiny little house near sam noble center) with 2 nights tips. Minimum wage at the time was $4.25/hr

I know who'll be working here and they're all seasoned smokers. They'll migrate from current smoking bars. They work in these places by preference.

Great fit - supply and demand works well for this, then!
