Thread: Red Prime

  1. Default Re: Red Prime

Same here. I wish I could eat there weekly. I've yet to have a bad meal there. Or a bad time for that matter.

Once, I went to a wedding reception upstairs...Food from a table. And it was still fantastic (not sure if that food was actually prepared at Red Prime though) for what it was.

  2. Default Re: Red Prime

Ate at Red Prime again a few days ago.

Not much new to report...Other than I went outside my Red Prime comfort zone and ordered my steak without the truffle butter. Just the coffee crust, which was perfectly subtle.

Asparagus and mushrooms were fantastic, and MY OH MY the almond crusted baked brie...Good grief I could eat a pound of that stuff. That's my new favorite thing. I want to go back and just eat that lol.

I shouldn't have brought up the bread a couple of years ago (scroll up )...There wasn't any at all this time around lol

I'm not complaining one bit. I walked out of there very full and very satisfied. Top notch steak, top notch staff, top notch all around.

So, you weren't brought bread at all? If so, this is WRONG. I'm thrilled that you had a great time and enjoyed the Brie, sides and steak, but the bread is wonderful and is a great start to the meal. Please PM me before your next visit. I'll tag in the reservation system as "the bread guy"...you'll get bread! Lol.
    Thanks for coming in!

I wanted to put my $.02 in on this place. I heard lots of good stuff about this place, so last time a good friend of mine was in town we decided to try it out. Let me preface with I've been to a lot of other nice steak places around OKC and elsewhere such as The Ranch, The Mantel, Mickey Mantels, Ocean Prime, Chophouse, Etc. So when going to Red Prime these were my expectations. We made a reservation for 3, which was surprisingly easy and available at such short notice. Parking was good, for being 'downtown'. When we walked in I was kind of surprised at home modern looking it felt. Kind of over the top in my opinion, but very nice, very clean. We were seated immediately and started looking over the menu. I can't remember if this is a place you get water immediately, (something I feel is a must for a high end restaurant) but I do remember speaking with the waiter fairly quickly. Unfortunately this is where it starts to turn into a bad experience for us. The restaurant was by no means busy, so to me service should be fantastic. In general at places that charge like Red Prime does, service should be fantastic, so I feel as though my expectations were fair. Once the waiter did come back we ordered drinks and also ordered food. The drinks took awhile, but looked right. My friend takes a drink, and then bites into the cherry in his drinks, and to much of our dismay pulls out the longest hair I've ever seen in food, drink or anything. Absolutely disgusting. We immediately flag down the water who continues to spend time at the only other table he has. The waiter says 'sorry about that', and takes the drink away abruptly really before we could say anything. A few minutes later the manager comes by and looks right at us and says 'I heard you folks have a problem.' We proceed to tell him no we do not have a problem, he in fact has a problem, there was a hair in the drink they served us. Now this is where our experience goes from something to chalk up as irritating but fixable, to downright horrible. The manager basically blames my friend. He says none of our bartenders have long hair, this can't possibly be our fault. So we say do you honestly think we planted this? His response is, well it has happened before. Okay, that's fantastic, but we didn't and are completely insulted you'd insinuate that. We aren't there to pick a fight so my buddy says, can you at least just get me a drink that doesn't have hair in it. Manager walks off and has the waiter bring back another drink, he tells us 'my manager' said this drink is on us. Okay, well I guess better than nothing. Shortly after our food came out and the waiter asked if we'd like more bread. Since we never got any we said what bread? To which his response was oh well I'll go get you some now. Great. I can tell they just want us to leave at this point. So we essentially hurry up cause we just want to leave. Our food was decent, definitely not up to snuff with high end restaurants. My steak was on par with Texas Roadhouse. Good, something you don't mind paying $18 for, but is overpriced for what it was. We skipped desert, figured we'd go elsewhere, someplace we could count on. Got the bill and my friend got charged for a drink. LOL are you kidding me? He technically only had one drink cause the other had hair. At this point enough was enough, so we asked the waiter, are we paying for the drink with hair in it, or the free drink your manager gave us? He just started, cause really I get it how do you answer that? We said forget about it, just tab us out we'd like to leave. Now my friend was way nicer than what I wanted to do. I really, really didn't want to tip. But I was convinced that 10% was still the right thing to do, so that's what we did.

I just can't see myself ever going back. I try not to be one and done with bad experiences, but basically being called a liar at a high end restaurant no less, I just can't see giving them my money, when there are such better options elsewhere that I've had such great experiences at.

Zuplar, that's horrible and disgusting. I've never been a restaurant manager but I'd assume manager training 101 is to do everything you can to mitigate the damage you're establishment has already done by serving a customer drink/food with a hair in it. And especially at a nicer establishment like this, they should be well versed on how to take care of customers and please them. Especially with social media being what it is today. It's not difficult for a bad customer experience to go viral.

Around ten years ago, in my married days, I'd made a reservation to get a private booth at Deep Fork. I believe it was for Valentine's day. Through no fault of the restaurant, the party before us lingered in that booth a lot longer than expected. They asked me if I wanted to take an open table and I told them that we were in no hurry and really wanted to wait for the private booth for the special experience. They gave us a free appetizer as we waited. Everyone who worked there was extremely nice about it. When they sat us down the waiter informed us to order anything because the dinner was free. They didn't have to do that and we would've been just fine paying for our meal. But they did do it and it made a great impression on us. That's how you take care of customers.

I'm a big fan of The Ranch. It's my go to when I want to take people to a nice dinner. Food has always been fantastic. I've only had one instance with what I'd call a so-so waiter, and if he'd been at Chili's I'd have thought he was great, I just hold places like this to a higher standard. Most of the time the service is above and beyond. Seriously they are great. Last time the waiter brought our table desert at no cost, just because he said we were really fun and management allows them to do that from time to time. It's that kind of service that IMO when you are a high end restaurant that sets the tone and keeps people coming back.

I 100% agree. I had an incident at Ocean Prime in Denver a few years ago where I was brought the wrong food. Not sure how it happened, but basically they brought me scallops instead of a filet mignion. Not I'm not sure how familiar people are with Ocean Prime, but it might even be fancier then places like The Ranch or Mickey Mantles. As soon as I say I'm sorry I didn't order that the manager was over apologizing, saying how embarrassed he was. I was like 'woah, it happens.' To which he responded it should never happen at Ocean Prime. He then proceeded to tell me he'd have an appetizer brought out for me free of charge so I'd have something to eat because he was embarrassed everyone else had their food and wanted me to have something to eat. I was like no big deal I appreciate it. So they brought out jumbo cocktail shrimp (fantastic might I add) and then he told me because of this my entire tab would be on the house. I told him look you made it right, the appetizer is fine, to which he promptly said he wanted me to have the Ocean Prime experience, and the only way to get that after their mistake was for it to be free. Okay, I guess I won't argue. Needless to say Ocean Prime comped by steak, the shrimp, my side, and an entire bottle of wine. something like $180 worth of food and drink. Are you kidding me? It ended up being one of my best restaurant experiences and I tell everyone. Which is exactly what they wanted. Now this is above and beyond, but a great example of customer service.

I have been a huge fan of Red prime for years. We don't get downtown for dinner much but daughter wanted steak (rare at that) for 16th birthday. This was in October. We had the big round private room. Service was off and the food quality lacked.

What is funny is I had not eaten at Mahogany since back close to when they opened as I wasn't very impressed when we went. Two weeks later after visiting Red prime, I needed a downtown steakhouse for nice business dinner for out of town friends. Due to the very so so experience at Red Prime, I booked Mahogany downtown. It was fantastic and they have redeemed themselves. I ended up giving Mahogany gift cards to several staff members at Christmas.

We went to Red Prime a couple of months back. I had forgotten how dark it is and I can absolutely not read the menu because of it. I had gone the year before and our waitress brought us a little flashlight so we could read the menu. Everything else was fine.
But this time the waitress kind of blew us off and said she didn't know why it was so dark and ended up walking off. We ended up using our light on our cell phone to read the menu. Other than that, it was all okay.

I've never been to Mahogany, but I usually hear very good things about them. I'm not big on going downtown for dinner, unless I'm looking for all evening entertainment, then it's great. I'll have to give the one downtown a try sometime.

I've been going to Mahogany since it first opened in OKC... Of the two locations I prefer the one on Memorial. The downtown location is nice and while both can be a little loud. I found the noise levels in the downtown location to be too much.... Or it could have just been the party of 6 that was originally seated in the bar that later relocated to the table near where we were relocated to after I requested to be moved to a different table because they were very loud.

I've never had a bad meal at Mahogany but I will say that some days the steaks have been better than other days and even on the days they weren't as good they were still really good.

The only time we ever had sub-par service my wife called and let the manager know and we were given $300 in gift certificates but every other visit the service has been top notch.

I've been to Red Prime twice. Once was for a Christmas party so I didn't hold them to a real high standard due to the number of people they had to serve. The meal was good, not what I expect from a prime steakhouse, but above what I've been served at most office parties..... The second time I went with friends and I was just underwhelmed by my steak. Not terrible by any means but not what I'm used to having at Mahogany.

The memorial location is a bit of a drive for me, but I suppose not much further than The Ranch. See to me your experience when you had an issue and called them about it is the response that makes these restaurants what they are. I think when you are spending that kind of money, top-notch service is expected.

That's terrible to hear. I agree that high end steakhouses should have impeccable service. I mean, the servers' tips usually rely on that. So why wouldn't they offer the best service imaginable? I never had bad service at Red Prime, but I will say I had one experience where I def feel like my steak was on par with Texas Roadhouse if not lower. So glad to hear someone else make the same comparison. The most recent visit was better, but not by much. We're big fans of the Ranch too, easily my favorite steakhouse here in the city. I have only had Mahogany once and it was good, not great. Need to try it again.

On a side note, has anyone been to Polo Grill in Tulsa? My wife and I took a little weekend getaway a few months back and decided to make a reservation here, as we've heard great things about it over the years. All I have to say is wow! Steak and service were, imo, better than anything I've had here in OKC. I've eaten at many other steakhouses around the country as well, and this may match or beat every single one of them in overall experience. That includes Ruth's Chris, Vic & Anthony's, Capital Grille, Gibson's, and many others. The place was actually kind of quiet for a weekend night, which concerns me. Hope they're doing ok. The steak was top-notch, so tender and flavorful and just melted in my mouth. Our server was the most professional server I've had in recent memory. Professional but friendly and helpful as well. I can not say better things about this place, and can't wait to get back to Tulsa to eat there again. Needless to say, he got a nice tip on a $200 tab from us. With those kind of tips, I don't understand why all servers at nice steakhouses don't perform like this.

I've been to Red Prime 3 times in the last 6 months and I've had nothing but great experiences. I haven't found a better steak in OKC.

My last trip to The Ranch was disappointing. Issues with wine, 2 of the 3 steaks were incorrectly cooked, and just an overall disappointing service. I guess off nights just happen.

It was my first time (about 4 months ago) and I had only ever heard great things so I was really looking forward to it. I will say I was the one of the 3 who had a properly cooked steak so mine was delicious but I still thought the steak from Red Prime was better. I need to give it another shot.

I have always thought Red Prime has better flavor with their steaks compared with the Ranch. To me, Ranch steaks are bland, and Red Prime steaks are full of flavor.

Yeah. No bread. None of the tables around us had any either, so I just assumed that it was no longer a thing or I'd have asked. No harm done man. Our server was outstanding, our meal was fantastic. I wish my asparagus was that f'n good.

FWIW, I went to dinner there last week with my wife, daughter and son -in-law. There were bread plates on the table and the waiter brought a pan of rolls and butter w/o being requested. The rolls were enjoyed by all and the waiter asked if we would like another pan when he brought our entrees and a second round were promptly delivered. All of us enjoyed our meals with perfectly done steaks and sides. Now I am not a foodie, and going out to an establishment such as this is a treat and not a regular thing, but I would return again as well as recommend it to others.

Went to Mahogany's in downtown yesterday. Service was pretty good. With how they advertise how they cook the steak, I was surprised there wasn't a crust on the steak. Appetizer looked like it came out of a container, not bad though. Drinks were good too.

Excellent experience last night at Red. The 18oz bone-in ribeye is a phenomenal steak. Black pepper crust was a nice compliment that didn't distract too much from the steak itself. Add a Brandy Ice to finish it off, and we left very happy.

Interestingly, we didn't get bread either, but I did notice it was going out to most other tables. Could have asked, but we were plenty happy and full with the apps, steak, sides and dessert.
