Thread: Train schedule for okc

    Default Train schedule for okc

Does anyone know where I can find the train schedule for the trains that go through Okc? I feel like some weeks there are a bunch during the day then other weeks not very many.

Not talking about the Heartland Flyer train schedule, I am talking about the freight train schedule

I might be mistaken, but I thought I heard that that was not available for the sake of the safety of the trains.

It wasn't safety of the trains though. It was to keep the oil shipments secret from lawsuits. The State passed it after local fire departments asked for the info in the wake of multiple high-profile derailments.

I wonder if this was a Homeland Security issue ?

I would love a schedule, I get caught at Hefner & Western way to often! Would be nice to be able to ask Siri "What trains are nearby" Similar to how you can ask Siri "What flights are overhead"

You'll have a tough time pinning down current timetables these days. Most freight movements don't run on a set schedule these days anyway. One of the best way to keep up with rail traffic is with a scanner.

Ditto. Scheduled service is generally only for hot intermodal trains, and then only as a timeframe - i.e., this train always leaves LA on Tuesday at noon and arrives in Chicago on Friday afternoon. Scheduled running by city/station is left to passenger trains (and isn't accurate anyway w/out dedicated passenger rail lines).

All true. The only rail traffic based on an actual timetable schedule is passenger service, with commuter service being the most accurate.

Freight service is a different animal, especially with trackage rights and reroutes by other railroads. Not even 30 minutes ago I was at 122nd & Santa Fe as a CSX unit grain haul passed through. You won't find that on any schedule.

Do they refrain from blowing the whistle when they pass through during the middle of the night, or am I just sleeping through it (or, for that matter, do they not pass through in the middle of the night?)? I generally don't hear anything until about 4-5 a.m.

On edit, to add that we find the train sounds soothing and aren't at all opposed to them. But of course we're a few blocks further in than some.

I'm pretty sure that there aren't any quiet zones in place yet in OKC, so they should be blowing their whistles at a certain distance or time before and through every ground-level crossing, in a pattern of 2 longs, a short, a long. Which, with the plethora of grade-level crossings in OKC means they whistle for a long time...

On the north south line, there are approximately 38 trains a day. Lengths vary. Times vary.

As for avoiding them, think of trains as Borg ancestors. Resistance is futile.
