Thread: Best nachos?

  1. #1

    Default Best nachos?

Have yet to find good nachos in this town and I know they're out there.

I typically like them with beans instead of meat and piled high with cheese, guacamole, peppers and pico de gallo.

Please provide your recs! Don't care if it's a sit-down place or a taqueria.

Taco Casa in Norman really piles it on. I think the dish is called Ultimate Nachos. In fact everything they make tastes so much better than most places.

These don't meet your criteria but they are fantastic - Iron Star:

Pulled Pork layered between corn tortilla chips, ancho chile sauce, fried onions, jalapenos and cheese, then baked and topped with red chile sour cream

I tried those at Iron Star and didn't care for them.

Might have caught them on an off day.

Probably have to kinda like the smokey/bbq flair they have and based on your description I suspected not really what you are looking for. My problem is I never met a nacho I didn't like!!! ha

I love Iron stars nachos, got get it with extra anch sauce otherwise they can be a little dry..... Taco Casa piles the cheese high that's no lie , best fast food nachos around. , Tacoville has some really good beef nachos with a side of their guacamole ( which they run out of it by noon everyday, it goes quick) is pretty hard to beat....and covered in their sauce.

Yes, those Iron Star nachos were entirely too dry.

Just browned chips, some cheese and then the meat was dry itself.

I love nachos but always have to just make them myself. I hate when restaurants pile all the cheese and stuff on the top only. I brown all the chips slightly first, then I layer the cheese so its not just on the top and heat the whole thing up again. Awesomeness!

The Cheesesteak nachos at Texadelphia are the best in the city, hands down.

Not a huge fan of nachos when dining out so I will say the best is the Italian Nachos at Johnny Carino's.

Like BBates I make the best in town. I use fresh tortillas, quarter them and deep fry them, and put what I like on them. I normally put bacon, green onions, jalapeños, and habaneros, and if I have any leftover ribeye, I chop it up and put it on as well. I use queso fresco and extra sharp cheddar. One thing I learned from a former El Chico employee is the secret to the runny cheese is to sprinkle some butter over the cheese. I have always used the microwave for one minute, but I have recently been told to put them in the oven for a few minutes and I'm going to try that next time.

I know that these aren't nachos per say, but one thing I like doing is taking some plain kettle cooked chips like Barcels, tossing fresh squeezed lime juice on them then some Valentina hot and extra hot sauce and tossing that. So good. 90% of the time I just do it in the chip bag.

    Tacos San Pedros for semi-authentic.

Flips does a decent Italian style if you order right.

Winner: The Mont in Norman for some killer cheese smothered chicken covered pickled jalapeño white boy platter style 4lb belly bomb plus sickly sweet sangria swirls to balance it all. Uber home...

Had the Texadelphia version tonight... Quite good! Really like their chips which are light and crispy but can still hold up to some toppings:

The black bean and chicken nachos at Belle Isle Brewery are the bomb! I usually get beef instead of chicken.

Also, the nachos at Shorty Smalls are surprisingly good and piled HIGH!

Hey that looks pretty good, I'll have to try it. I too have been looking for a really good nacho plate for some time now.

I'm with CT, I usually end up making my own at home. My preferred toppings are diced tomato, black olives, green onions, jalapeños, fajita chicken, and queso fresca tossed about on top (I am not a fan of the liquid cheese phenomenon), with sides of guacamole, sour cream, and salsa on the side. If anyone knows where I can get nachos like this please let me know, sometimes I am lazy and would rather just buy them ready to go!

Sorry Pete. But that pie tin + fast food carafe of salsa and ice cream scoops of cream & guac just ruin it for me.

Texadelphia's version wasn't great by any means.

I will continue to document my search!

Questor, based on the ingredients you've specified, you'd very likely be a fan of the nachos at Tacos San Pedro, just west of SW 44th and Penn. Give 'em a shot if you haven't already. They have a great menu of traditional-ish Mexican street food like tacos, burritos, quesadillas, flautas, sopes, etc.

It's been a while since I've had them, but Pepe's ingredients are usually fresh and good. I'd be interested to know what you think...
