Just for fun, I made a new state flag as well.

Looks like a flag you'd see for an African country.

I thought it did a pretty good job of reflecting Oklahoma's climate, vegetation, and geography.

    Yes, it is.

Here's one with a sun instead of stars.

i was thinking along those lines but instead of the sun, the city seal could be used. it'd be a compromise between the current design and a newer, fresher alternative. -M

Good idea. Could also drop black (or some color) line art of the city seal over the yellow.

Going back to the original design criteria - the city seal shouldn't be used. The current city flag uses the City Seal but it is too much detail to be on a flag. Plus, at the top of a flag pole it is too small to see from the ground.

Also - the stars have meaning that can't be replicated by the sun. They represent the people living in peace with each other and each playing their role to complete the circle. In short, the 5 stars represent a whole greater than the sum of the parts.

One other thing - the red, white, and blue are from the City Seal.

Circles have the same meaning in most cultures. The five stars make up a circle.

    (Why five stars?)

Red, yellow and blue make up a triad of color, a balanced color scheme from a design perspective and whatever that implies.

I did 5 stars because that was the size that fit, and still be able to tell they were stars from a distance. They also form a pentagram in the center, which has all kinds of meanings and symbolism of its own. As for the colors, like I said, they came from the City Seal which has those 3 colors on it.

On the State flag, I did use red, yellow, and blue.

The lone 46th star from the original Oklahoma flag would have worked well in the red field of that design and paid homage to Oklahoma's early history as a state.

Yea, I tried it with just a single star but it didn't look as good as I thought, plus, after feedback and discussions with others, I decided the City flag shouldn't have state representation on it (nor corporate interest like my original design had). Likewise, I left off any references to cities or industries on the State flag.

    single star
single star, sun, unity, letter O, triad color scheme, long version, short version, plus.

Not bad, I just really dislike that it isn't squared off on the end like a normal flag.

Red hills, blue sky and whatever. More balanced from a design perspective. Less expensive to have made.

Can you do the sun and star in white and see what that looks like?

Some really good ideas. Kerry, I like several you have come up with and I guess most of the others are just modifications of your design. Some of them are worth considering. I don't like that last one only because it looks too "busy." But, he's contributed some good stuff in this thread.

I also agree that once there is a really good city flag - we could see it darn near everywhere. It shows a sense of pride that we should have for our city.

I like the last iteration with the white star, but if we wanted to get rid of the scissor tail, what if we want back to my original concept with the thicker "K" and squared off "C."
