Thread: Santa Fe HS Football Stadium

  1. #1

Default Santa Fe HS Football Stadium

In February, voters approved a bond measure to build a stadium at Edmond Santa Fe, with plans to open for the 2017 season.

The stadium will be built on the current practice field site and will hold 6,000 fans, feature new artificial turf, new bleachers on both sides and a two-story press box. A new fieldhouse will be added as well.

A future bond issue will remodel the stadiums at Memorial and North if passed, which many expect to not be an issue after votes approved the bond by 82.3 percent.

Why doesn't Edmond build one facility for all the schools?

Because when they add a 4th high school, you can't physically schedule 4 schools at 1 stadium.

Currently, they all play at Wantland Stadium at UCO. Once the 4th high school is completed, there is no way they can all play there.

BTW, the 3 Putnam City schools will soon each have their own stadiums.

A bond measure was passed last year to add bleachers and more facilities to the practice fields at PC West and PC North so they can play their home games on campus.

In the case of those schools, it's a simple matter of not needing a 10,000 seat stadium or the related parking. They are only drawing a few thousand on big nights, and usually more like 1,000 to 2,000, which is easy to accommodate at the schools.

Forgive my ignorance, because I'm accustomed to Texas HSFB, but are Saturday games not options here? They even play Thursday games in my hometown because we only have one facility (but are soon building another).

They don't play Saturday HS games in Oklahoma, I'm sure due to the huge amount of people going to and interested in college games.

College football is certainly no slouch in Texas either. Sorry I guess I just don't get it, but I guess it goes right in line with every little podunk town having to have it's own school district as well.

Edmond schools occasionally play on Thursday for scheduling reasons as well. I remember one per year was on a Thursday when I went to Edmond Memorial.

    Pahdz,
Are you a taxpayer in the area? I'm not, but my reason for asking the question is Pete's original statement "In February, voters approved a bond measure to build a stadium at Edmond Santa Fe, with plans to open for the 2017 season." So, the voters were willing to pay and if they want to pay for a stadium, I say let them. It's no skin off my nose.

Not an Edmond citizen, but just generally curious as someone who came from a place where multiple HS districts were common and shared facilities were the norm.

    Pahdz,
I understand, and actually, if everything we hear about finances in the school system is true, then I do question their priorities, but it's their choice. Heck, even my little Oakdale district approved a bond issue to build a football stadium, and they are kindergarten through eighth grade. It won't be a high school type but the bond issue was almost two million dollars.

    Pahdz,
Sometimes I forget that this is "OKCTALK", and we carry on conversations, and you should be able to ask a simple question without somebody like me gigging you on it.

Don't sell it short. College football in Texas is a tremendous slouch.

I imagine the stadium at Santa Fe will be shared as needed. I do know using the UCO stadium has become more difficult, due to both scheduling issues, and cost issues. UCO has gotten greedy and more controlling in their arrangements in the past few years. And yes, with a 4th high school, sharing the single college stadium would be impossible. Santa Fe is the only high school that had the space to easily accommodate an expanded stadium with additional parking. The Memorial and North Stadiums can be remodeled/upgraded, but they are limited in space and parking. To me it's more productive to focus on also building a nice stadium at the 4th high school, since it will be isolated geographic wise. North and Memorial are both within 5 miles of Santa Fe.

This bid out to general contractors today and should have construction start within a month. Nothing to fancy on the inside but here are the floor plans.
