Thread: I need an Edmond Vet

Default I need an Edmond Vet

I just moved to Edmond and I finally have my dog living here with me--YAY--he was staying with my mom til things were better situated.

He's an 11 year old Chihuahua that is very well cared for.

I chatted with Dr. Pam back home and his Rabies shot is due next month. Before I can get his records sent here I need to find a Vet.

Midnite's very picky but a well-behaved dog. He tends to like females better than males.

    Any suggestions?

Woodland Trails Animal Hospital, Dr. Mauri (sp?). She's outstanding. We take all three of our dogs there and they love her.

I use Banfield, which is inside PetSmart. Not only are they nice, but they also have wellness plans. I just put my new dog on one and had my other dog on one until she died.

The plan that I took is about $25.00 per month and includes all vaccinations and unlimited office visits, as well as a lot more. I save several hundred dollars a year.

Just a note on Banfield. Holly used Dr. Nancy Rose on the south side. Dr. Rose is a very kind and caring vet. She even held and hugged Holly a bit before I took her (Holly) in my arms where she died.

I wasn't aware that they had that service in PetSmart, I don't live very far from there and Midnite always has so much fun when we go there.

As for boarding, I found that out the hard way once when I visited family in Germany... all three of our dogs had stopped eating... they looked awful and smelled awful and they acted VERY strange the first couple of weeks after we came back. I think if I go somewhere I need to leave him with family or family friend.

I will check these out, thank you all so much for the info!

One caution about Banfield: I have had several vets tell me, including a vet I went to college with, tell me that Banfield is notorious for over-medicating, over-inoculating and even recommending/giving inoculations and treatments that aren't even necessary or desirable.

We took our dogs there for a while until we found the vet that we're using now and discovered that the dogs were getting way too many shots, which translated to lots of wasted dollars with no additional benefit to our pets.

We love PetSmart, we just learned to shy away from Banfield.

Take it for what it's worth.

What it is worth is simple. I am a Banfield client and have never had any animal "over medicated" or any unneccessary services. personally, I like the fact I saved $400 on my dogs last visit.

Thanks, MrA, for setting me straight. I'm sure that your former animal control officer/law enforcement officer experience outweighs the qualified expertise and experience of at least five seasoned, fully credentialed vets.

However, it is documented that I have saved several hundred dollars with my three dogs by not accepting Banfield's questionable recommendations for unnecessary and not-at-all cheap treatments, not to mention that we've had fewer health problems since moving them from Banfield to our current vet.

Sorry to stir up the boards!

It seems like every town has Vets that are specialized or do better with certain types of pets.

I know in my hometown Dr. Pam was Excellent with small dogs and cats. Dr. Tom across town did exceptional work with larger breeds. The Vet out on the highway was mainly geared toward animals with certain diseases (for instance, Feline AIDS).

I am looking for a female Vet that's good with little dogs I feel better now that I have some places to look at.

Trust me, you are not the one stirring up the board.

She's right, Angelicfly. You didn't stir anything up.

There are indeed many good vets in Edmond. I'm partial to the one we take our dogs to simply because of how well the dogs are treated and the fact that they actually are excited to see the vet when we walk in the door. She reminds me of how I remember the friendly, helpful, small-town vets used to be. Her staff is great too!

(BTW, we have two pugs and a Lhasa Apso -- obviously all small dogs.)

I would never take another one of my babies to PetSmarts..

I bought my little guy in 2000 when he was just 5 weeks old. I took him to the Petsmart in Norman for a check up before I drove him back home to Nevada. We get to the exam room and the stupid tech lady dropped HIM... She never said she was sorry she never said a word.. I was so upset I grabbed him and as we were leaving I told the Vet what happened..

She never apologized and the guy in front of her said that happened to his little guy also, but his pug broke her little leg.
I ended up taking cowboy to my vet I had when I was living in Oklahoma for his check up. Turned out he needed a nose job, Shih Tzus sometimes has problems with their noses not being open enough to breath right.

I would never ever take my baby back to a vet in Petsmart... I will drive out of my way to avoid that crazy place.

Well, since it has been brought up...

I didn't have a good experience at Banfield with my kitty Anchovy, either, and neither did my sister. They really hurt my sister's greyhound, but putting surgical tape on a cut...the problem with that, is that greyhounds have very, very thin skin...and the tape just kept pulling, and pulling...poor doggie

My sister now takes her greys to a greyhound specialist. I don't live near a Petsmart, but I wouldn't take my kitties there. We go to PetFriends, at 10th and MacArthur. It isn't really close to us, either, but we have received good treatment and reasonable prices there.

I would like to recommend Stoneridge on Kelly, just south of where BigLots used to be (southeast corner of Edmond Rd and Kelly). I discovered them when I adopted a pet from Edmond Animal Shelter and was given a free checkup for Luke. They are caring professionals, the vets and the entire staff. 359-3340, 610 South Kelly is their address. The vets are down to earth, don't talk above my head, reasonable prices (LOTS better than the AMC on 2nd and I35 in Edmond) and really seem to care about my "kids"
