2014 Oklahoma Earthquake Discussion

Maybe subject to update, 4.1 earthquake west of Stillwater at 9:41 am. OGS has it at 3.8. It was definitely felt and heard in Stillwater for several seconds. It was different for sounding like a sudden high gust of wind, rather than like distant thunder. It was definitely a stronger than usual Stillwater area earthquake as well as for Oklahoma.

I was on a conference call with a few folks in the Tulsa area, one mentioned it, she was working at home, the others in the office in Tulsa didn't feel it, but thought it was strange to have felt it all the way up there.

After a lull, earthquake activity has been picking up the pace. Medford area is still a hot spot where a 4.0 quake happened Thursday night, 9/18/14. Wednesday in Oklahoma had a dozen quakes over 2.0. Between Guthrie and Edmond remains active. The area northeast of Stillwater has become more active. The area southeast of Stillwater is in a lull. The newest hot spot is just to the south of Perry. A renewed lull is welcomed to set in anytime.

Looks like we have a pair of quakes on going. One happened about 15 minutes ago north of Edmond was a 3.6 and a 2nd is just winding down. Looks to be low 3s. UPDATE: 2nd was a 3.3 so not far off.

Whew, a very noticeable earthquake in Stillwater around 2:45 PM. It only lasted around a second and made my French doors rattle. It might have been a bit stronger than usual, so it will be interesting how USGS or OGS puts its strength. Interesting, it didn't come with a loud noise. Instead, it was one of those types that come with a sound like a sudden gust of wind.

OGS has the earthquake in the hot spot south of Perry. It's 3.5, so not as bad as the Cushing one yesterday.

Felt something here at the airport about 5-10 minutes ago it rattled the building, don't know if it was an earthquake or not

I felt it too, in central OKC (I-44/23rd St). Mild but lasted quite a while. My computer monitor was visibly shaking and I could feel it under my office chair.

We felt it here at sw 104/MacArthur. Didn't last long but was good little shake

A new hot spot for Oklahoma quakes, most interesting for venturing to a different part of the state has popped up. It goes further into nw Oklahoma near Mooreland, or to the east of Woodward. Frequent earthquakes there for the last week have contributed to keeping the level of earthquake activity well up more than any other area. I wonder if some oil drilling recently started there.

The Edmond-Guthrie area remains active with the nearby Langston area trying to get more active after a lull. Hot spots also continue northeast of Stillwater and north of Enid. The hot spot just to the south of Perry quieted down only to be replaced by a new hot spot to the wsw of that town. The Cushing area has fortunately quieted down, considering how a 4.3 had happened there.

4.1 earthquake between Perkins and Stillwater Sunday afternoon, 11/9/14. With help from a renewal of earthquakes near Anthony, KS, Oklahoma area earthquakes have been increasing somewhat lately in frequency.
