Thread: Chili Dog Express

  1. Default Chili Dog Express

I was driving down 4th street and noticed Chili Dog Express at 329 N.W. 4th Street.

I love a good dog and the pictures on their FB page look good.... Has anyone tried it?

  2. Default Re: Chili Dog Express

Been in once. Its across the street from a friend's law office. It was 'okay' to 'good.' Nothing special about the dog or the location. Nothing wrong with it either. Be interesting to see if they can sell enough to keep paying the rent and themselves.

  3. Default Re: Chili Dog Express

So I better go try it soon before it's gone?

I've been there about half a dozen times. I prefer their chili with beans to the Greek style of chili used on Coney Islands. By a long shot. All the ingredients are high quality and they don't skimp on a thing. So very glad they are nearby when I get the craving.

Never met a chili dog I didn't like. Will be checking this place out.

Anyone try the new Mighty Dog near NW 23rd and Portland? I knew the guy who opened it, but heard it has already changed hands. Haven't stopped in, just driven by.

I went shortly after it opened.... The dogs and chili (I think both were Schwab's) were good but the guy working the counter that day spent most of his time complaining about his personal life and why he was the only one there working that day.

All I really needed to know was that he was short-handed. All the details were a little too much information. Especially when he was doing a pretty good job of keeping the line moving on his own.

So their chili has beans in it? Do they have a bean free chili?

I'm not sure...my dog had BRISKET.

That was probably the original owner. I believe the painting done on the building was the same guy who did some of the interior murals in Toby Keith's place in Bricktown (they were good friends) and it looks like his style.

I saw on the new owner's Facebook page that a dog is $4. Seemed a bit high to me unless that's with chips and a drink.

If I remember right. The menu when I was there were all combo prices because it seemed to confuse him when I wanted more than one dog.

The building is nice on the inside, has a lot of character, and it appears that it might have been a diner at one point but they weren't using the service window but did still have the counter seating.

Other than it's location, which can be overcome if the food and service is good enough, I think it has a lot of potential and there was a steady stream of customers coming and going the day I was there.

Edit: If this is the correct FB page. The guy in the middle of the picture was who served me the day I was there.

Re-edit: This appears to be the current FB page

Chili Dog Express doesn't offer bean free chili. Mighty Dogs is bean free. Their basic dog is intended to be a clone of Coit's and pretty much nails it. I went under the original ownership, seeking a straight up chili dog, but the ordering/preparation process was awkward and I had to listen to an extended, scripted explanation of the menu from the wife while the hubby tried to upsell me like a used car salesman from across the restaurant. The dog was passable, but the experience was not pleasant. Chili Dog Express is much nicer and more to my tastes. It's also a lot closer to home.

Yeah, that was the original owner, Robert. I heard he sold it, but never heard the 'real reason.' I'm guessing something went wrong as for years all he talked about was opening a Mighty Dog. To lose it so quickly is not a good sign IMO.

Well this is just conjecture but based on some of the things he said the day I was there.... I would guess cash flow issues.

That would be my guess too. Too bad, would have been a fun business to run that could eventually be a landmark type establishment for that area of town. Hopefully the new owners are doing it right.

I agree 100%. I saw all kinds of potential in the place the day I was there.

I looked up Mighty Dog and on urbanspoon.com somebody commented that they served Weber's root beer. Just like Coit's. I think I will have to give them a try although, chili with beans on a hot dog? I wouldn't do that, but I will reserve judgment. And I need to try Chili Dog Express too. Not a huge hot dog fan, but once in a while they just hit the spot.

To clarify, Chili Dog Express=beans, Mighty Dog=no beans.

The day I was there they served Weber's in a bottle.... Don't know if that changed with ownership or not.

Can we seperate the Mighty Dog and the Chili Dog express convos? At this point I cannot tell which restaurant y'all are discussing in which post.

WRT Chili Dog Express, you guys should visit their Yelp and Urbanspoon (etc) pages and give them some love. ...

In one of those rare instances, they really *were* closed for a week of construction but have been back open for a while.
