‘Pioneer Woman' design picked by panel for quarter

    By Chris Casteel
    Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — Chalk one up for the "Pioneer Woman.”

After being roundly rejected by the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts last week, the Pioneer Woman got some love this week from a special committee making recommendations for states' commemorative quarters.
The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee recommended Oklahoma's quarter, to be released next year, bear a design showing the state's outline, an Indian "peace pipe” and the "Pioneer Woman,” a statue in Ponca City of a woman and child that honors the state's early homesteaders.
Gov. Brad Henry's office sent five design proposals to Washington for the state's commemorative quarter, and all five now will be sent to the U.S. Treasury secretary, with the recommendations of the Fine Arts Commission and the coinage advisory committee.

Not sure if they got our letter but who knows?? It may have helped!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

The Pioneer Woman. That makes ME proud as it stands about one mile from where I was born. Plus, all four of my Grandparents were founding parents of Ponca City. So, her selection is a very personal honor.

The Citizens Coinage group selected Pioneer Woman, whic hthe Fine Arts group panned. Maybe we should offer a mebership to OKC Talk for the remaining people involved in the selection process.

Oklahomans have the chance to choose the design of a special commemorative quarter honoring Oklahoma.
The quarter will be issued early next year by the U.S. Mint.

Five designs have been finalized by the mint.

Gov. Brad Henry, who had the option to pick a recommendation, has decided to let Oklahomans decide by voting either at a special Web site or through the mail. The design with the most votes will be the state's design.

The vote on the quarter will begin Friday and concludes at 5 p.m. April 27.

The designs include representations of the Pioneer Woman statue in Ponca City; gushing oil derricks; the scissortail flycatcher, the state bird; and an American Indian calumet, also known as a peace pipe.

Oklahomans may vote for their favorite quarter designs at a Web site, Governor Brad Henry. The page can also be reached through the state's official Web site at ok.gov, as well as through Henry's homepage at www.gov.ok.gov. Those without easy access to the Internet may mail their preference to:

    State Quarter Contest

Office of the Governor, Suite 212

    State Capitol Building

    Oklahoma City, OK 73105

The winning selection will be announced and submitted to the U.S. Mint no later than May 1

It won't be ready to vote until Friday.. I'm so picking the Pioneer woman... anything but the Flycatcher Bird! Oklahoma = Flies.. uh,uh..doesn't work for me.

The last thing I want is for everyone to think we have a need for a fly catching bird.. no offense to the bird or anything.

    I went with #1. It was between 1 & 5 for me.

I didn't realize that the Pioneer Woman was on 4 of them...

I went with number 4. It's the most asthetically pleasing. I don't love the oil well but it's better that the bird.

I went with number 1 also but like Madmonk, it was between 1 & 5... we're psychic like that!
