Thread: Lake Hefner Golf Course

    Default Lake Hefner Golf Course

In case you guys haven't been out there this summer, the course has been in outstanding shape and plays much more difficult these days. The head greens keeper is the former second in charge at Southern Hills, and it shows. Greens are great, and they have actually grown the first cut out to where there is penalty for inaccurate drives. Played the front 9 on the south course yesterday and even though it's been browning a bit with the lack of rain before today it was still in great shape.

I play there almost every Saturday. It really is a solid muni.

However last week I had an issue. I could only play nine and while they have a cart fee for nine, they didn't have a nine hole green fee. Which makes zero sense (it's for all city courses). We went back and forth and I ended up leaving. I'm not paying for 18 holes when I'm only playing nine.

It just sets a bad precedent to me. Golf isn't cheap to play and popularity have been declining. You have the usga implementing their Play Nine initiative yet you don't have a fee for nine. I hope they rethink their business model. Somewhat rant over.

That no fee for 9 holes thing irks me as well. We did tee off at 6pm Friday and with cart was only 13 bucks each

It's downright silly to recognize the sales value in a 9 hole cart fee, but not see value in offering either a 9 hole green fee or a 9 now, 9 later package.

Probably because all of the greens still have to be maintained whether you play 18 or 9.

Maybe they should make either the north or south course two 9 hole courses. Might be hard to keep full though. Playing a mix of 9 hole and 18 hole players on a single 18 hole course makes scheduling an efficient money making schedule hard to do.

Like Kevin said…9 now, 9 later…super super simple.

I saw yesterday that KIckingbird has 9 hole green fees/cart Edmond, OK - Official Website - Fee Schedule

Where it isn't so simple as you imply is that you have to balance out starts for 9 & 18 players. On a 18 hole course, starting those playing 9 and 18 on the same course can be tricky. Otherwise, you just lose the income. The demand for 9 hole has to outweigh the scheduling issues and loss of income thereby. If the demand on the course is low, then slotting in an 9 hole player is not a problem. On busy courses it just means loss of income.

Well I think we can agree that its pretty rare for someone to play 9 at 12:30 on a Saturday, so I wont say that's the norm, and during that time there is virtually no demand. I just had a wedding I had to get to.

But I think they should have it available at least for twilight hours (after 3pm) and all during the week days. For those people who don't have ~4+ hours and just want to play. 9 should be encouraged. However, if you make them pay for 18 it might just leave a sour taste in peoples mouths and they might go elsewhere.

They have twilight rates because you can't play 18 holes then. It is much cheaper.

Right now Twilight fees start at 1pm (weekdays) and 2pm (weekends) for okc public courses. If you can't play 18 starting at those times then you should probably look at another leisure activity.

    LOL. Agreed.

The fees are much less. One can buy a twilight fee and just play 9.....or 12.... or however many they want.

And, by the way, our fees on munis in OKC are already pretty much a bargain.

When I was a younger teen, the largest (only?) course in my home county was not crowded early afternoons. We'd often grab a burger, swim a while, then play 3.5 holes if there were not too many adults on the course. We'd play the first 3, then write down our typical scores on hole 4-8 and then just over to the side of tee 4, turn back toward the club, call it laying 2, and play on back to green 9 (very conveniently located near the pool)

On really hot days, or more girls at the poll than normal days, that was about all the golf we wanted anyway. Evenings and cooler weather we'd spend more time with it. I sometimes miss golf, but once I got older I fell more into the golf is a nice walk spoiled by an erratic lil white ball crowd.

Well this has gone way off topic, but if you are looking for a 9 hole jaunt go play James Stewart, or play late at Hefner and pay about 12 bucks with cart and get as many as you can in.

Or, and haven't tried it yet, 5 bucks I think to play OSU-OKC course, you have to walk but it's usually looking in great shape. Need to get over there one day to play.
