    joninatx, please correct me if I'm wrong on this, but didn't Austin used to be fairly conservative 10-20 years ago?

    Pretty sure Austin has been a liberal bastion for several decades, thanks to the University of Texas. Hippies were common in 1960's and 1970's Austin. If anything it has become more conservative overall in recent years though still more left leaning than other parts of Texas especially in the central neighborhoods.
