Thread: Newsok Website

    Default Newsok Website

Has anyone else noticed a change in the newsok.com website? I am experiencing problems with their site; massive ads, redirects, and I'm not sure, but I think their site gave me a virus. Just curious.

    No problems here

I've had it happen a few times lately too. You click to read a story and then you're brought to a page that has links to all kinds of different pages that has nothing to do with Oklahoma news, but it still says NewsOK in the upper left corner. I don't trust it now, so I've just been going to news9.com instead.

I do get some large pop-up ads (done by some group known as Undertone) and the other day I got some Norton warnings when trying to look at certain articles. The ad lasts for about 5 seconds and goes away on its own. I figured it was just part of their revenue generation plan.

I deleted all my internet browser history, all cookies, and temp files and I am not getting the pop-up any more.

on edit - scratch that after about 5 views of newsok it came back.

They changed up the mobile site. My only complaint is stories seem more scattered now and less centralized.

Are any of you subscribers to the online edition of The Oklahoman?

NewsOK is an unpleasant site to visit anymore. I don't understand why they can't streamline things and clean the site up visually. And the ads sprinkled throughout the articles are extremely annoying. I guess I can understand their need to generate revenue, but damn, there's got to be a way to at least maintain some semblance of caring about the readers' experiences to your site.

I have started avoiding it.. their links on Facebook are horrible.. seems like an endless link of crap to get to a story.. and then if its a "List" story that OKC is on you have to click each thing to move to next item on list.. when that happens Im done.

It's kind of turning into a gossipy site as well or it just links you to some other site.

Outside of Steve's coverage and the Thunder, I hate visiting that site anymore.

    Dennis,
I am, and the "Print Replica" option for viewing the paper is the biggest piece of junk I have ever used and I have been on the internet since the early days. I stay with it because it is part of my morning ritual, read the paper, have a cup of coffee or tea and get ready for the day. I would take the delivered paper except I'm not able to walk the 300 feet each way (and my scooter won't run on my gravel drive) to pick it up.

    Dennis,

Yes. The Oklahoman subscription apparently came along as part of the print package we receive (Wed. + Fri-Sun)

I get the print version, so they throw the online edition in free.

I bought an actual print edition of the Sunday Oklahoman at Shell the other day and was shocked at how little news there was in the paper. I was also surprised to see a large banner ad running along the bottom of the front page!

Any webpage with auto-playing videos is insta-nope for me.

    BINGO.

NewsOK, for a time, was at least somewhat leading edge for a news site presence on the web, but since the Gaylords sold out (some time ago), there's been a fairly consistent shift toward morphing NewsOK into basically an aggregator site for numerous other craptastic celebrity garbage and rumor sites. Really gone down the tubes, and they promote that as the "premium" online experience I should be willing to pay for, on top of autoplay videos. Those are a bandwidth-wasting bane to humanity, but unfortunately likely to be increasingly prevalent as HTML5 becomes more of the norm.

Pay for access? Not in this lifetime, folks. I *might* have considered paying for how their old site was structured, perhaps on a month-at-a-time access, but not the way it has deteriorated. I'll take what they offer for free now, and I'm sure the paywall will become more extensive as time moves along, but c'est la vie.

I pretty much get the paper just to help keep someone employed.

    THIS! Holy hell, this.

My standard tactic at newsok is open a page in a new window, sound off. I continue on with something else and get to the page a bit later. Video has stopped by them and sound was off so it is no big. If they get any credit for unwatched ads, that's between them and their advertisers. I am not even a bystander.

Yeah, I went on rampage about auto-starting video a LOOONG time before HTML5 was barely more than an idea, and sites that host them should be banished for ever and all time.

Well said, SoonerDave. I can't stand the auto-run video. I bet half the people who have ad-block on would unblock it and whitelist it if it weren't for those %^$# videos.
And then they have to put these up - they don't get it.

If they consider disabling auto-run videos.
