I'm excited! I hope they put one near Mustang. They lean more towards cake donuts than other people and those are my favorite.
The awesome thing about them is that they don't close early (or at all)! The problem with "mom and pop" stores are that unless you wake up early on the weekends, you aren't getting donuts!
I really loved the Baskin Robbins combined stores when I visited out east; they should totally do that here.
My wife and I recently fell in love with DD's iced lattes and iced coffee. The Edmond location is a bit of a drive so were thrilled to hear the plans for 13 more. We can't imagine that there won't be one someone near the Quail Springs area. Hopefully more North than South.
I can't believe I just saw this news. This will be great! Mom-and-pop type stores are well and good, and Brown's cinnamon sugar donuts will always have a place in my heart. But to my perspective, there's a glut of M&P in Oklahoma City. Expansions of chains as these, and their just-as-unique offerings in many instances, are welcome.
Not a Dunkin' fan at all. Mom and pop donut shops are the best by far.
Where are the mom and pop shops/bakeries in OKC? It doesn't seem like we have many. Would love to have something even within a couple miles from me.
At least many DD stay open 24 hrs and have a lot better selections than most small shops like Daylite Donuts. And DD coffee is generally better than Starbucks.
Two that come to mind are the What-A-Donuts on the far NW side of the city, and the aforementioned Brown's on the circle, across from Kaiser's. I just thought of another on 10th and Meridian-ish, which is of some note with their eclectic offerings which I'll need to try.
I know there's more. I ask your understanding that I only have these at instant, since I don't make a career of donuts, and the knowledge of only two of these places has been sufficient for me.
I missed this the first time.
I will add with this that maybe I was a bit hasty with my dismissal of donuts as a career. I like to watch what I eat for a variety of reasons, and I'm not always able to hop on the bicycle to compensate for a fistful of them. It was with that sentiment in mind that I wrote that, and I would more accurately say, along with my friend's testimonies, that I am truly something of a connoisseur. Anyway:
Yes! The odd hours. What-A-Donut has largely changed this last I saw, but they used to close around lunchtime. Most of these smaller donut shops have their prime time around 6:30 to 8 in the morning, with their respective klatches of elders, and the selection (and firmness) usually takes a dive thereafter. One of my favorite times for donuts is at night, when these purportedly-superior ones (de gustibus non est disputandum, you know) are barely glints in the baker's eye.
I'll trade the Edmond DD for a good Europeain pastry shop. I want my morning strudel.
Also some good Austrian pastry with my coffee would be great.
There are many Mom and Pop Donut Shops around. Are favorite is Tinker Donuts on Air Depot and Best Donut across from Dunkin Donuts in Del City. I also love Dunkin and Krispy Kreme.
The only downside to the local places is that you have to get up early if you want the good stuff. Most shops lock the doors as soon as the day's batch is consumed or mostly consumed.
inside my belly
:-P
There's a good donut shop on Harrah Road in between SE 44th and SE 29th. The baker there does great apple fritters and others and transitions to a lunch / dinner menu around noon.
I would love to open a franchise on the NW side of town and I know the perfect location but we will see what they do.
"Potato Based" . . . hmm . . . is this, perhaps, a sort of resurrection of the famous Spudnut? It would be a wonderful thing if it was. Spudnuts were GREAT!!!
(of course, I have to drop another 20 pounds before I'll permit myself a donut so it may be a moot point, yet . . .)
Say! You know how they just permitted a Gun Range that also serves adult beverages?
How about a donut shop with a well-stocked bar and a good beer selection?
They could call it "Drunken Donuts" . . .
How do you people bump this thread today of all days and not mention the free donuts at DD and KK?
