Thread: Daebak K

It's hard for the Mesta Park people because they don't want to be put in the position of opposing neighbors then having to live with them.

How many of these NIMBYs are there? I understand wanting neighborhood harmony but these people are wrong and if people don't stand up to them they are going to undermine the 23rd Street renaissance. The response against them has been overwhelming so far.

This thread title sounds like some kind of vaccine that the starship Enterprise has to get to a distant whatever colony and the Ferangi try and steal it.

So the petition is at 811 signatures now. I looked back through the list and noticed that signature number 738 is none other than Marty Dillon, owner of the tower theater... Maybe we should start a petition for Dillon to sell or develop the Tower

Aren't that many. Remember, the last 23 rd st issue was derailed by a fellow 23rd buisness persons, not Mesta nimbys

Still stunned that these folks are OK with the status quo. Plasma Center, Church's Chicken, boarded up apartments, empty, weed-laden lots. Abandoned retail shops. Why do they think their precious nabe is bordering Park Avenue?

It's hard to believe that they will win. How is it that bad development can't be stopped, but good development can be.

Up to 840 signatures now. I'd say their goose is cooked.

Winning the petition battle is different than winning Meg Salyer's vote.

What does Meg Salyer have to do with this?

BTW, Guyutes and Daebak K were both unanimously approved by the Urban Design Committee yesterday.

Today, there is the Planning Commission meeting where they will consider the ABC permit for Guyutes. Daebak K already has their liquor license, so they will be good to go.

Just confirmed that Daebak K hopes to file their building permits soon (approval is just a formality at this point) and be open near the end of the year.

Can't wait to not only see the beautiful building but have another great addition to the emerging OKC culinary scene.

Way to go, OKCTalk! What a great addition to the Uptown scene.

Been following this thread and Guyetes since last week.
It really is freaking awesome to see support (and fruition!) for something like this. I'm sure you guys want OKC to become a more modern and "real" city far more than someone like me.
Hope Daebak will be successful and usher in some more Korean restaurants

The sobering thing about this is that the only difference between Daebak K getting their approvals and Guyutes not getting theirs is that a few (and i mean very few) neighbors of Guyutes made more noise than the neighbors of Daebak K. We're talking about less than 5 people tipping this thing one way or the other.

Ridiculous. The Guyutes people should sue.

I agree about more Korean. I had never had much experience with Korean food until a couple of years ago (and still not enough!). I knew that it was supposed to be excellent, but owing to the smallish Korean population here I just don't think much has had a chance to take root. I have enjoyed plenty of Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and "Chinese" over the years, and love the Asian take on food, but they are all so different in their own right. A couple of years ago a couple that we worked with (he was ex-military and she was from Korea) made our office a lunch that was absolutely incredible. I had been talking to them about my curiosity regarding Korean food, and they decided to show was better than to tell. From that day on I have really been hoping for a great Korean place to emerge here.

I'm pretty excited about Daebak but Oklahoma City, or probably should say the OKC Metro area, has plenty of good Korean options already..... B-Won, Seoul Garden, Jeon-Ju, Kim's Kitchen, Dong-a, Fusion and that's not all of them.... Granted none of those are in Oklahoma City limits but Del City, Midwest City, and Moore are all in the metro area and all serve up tasty food.

Yeah, that's what our friend said. Also there is supposed to be at least one decent place in Lawton. I think where there is not a big existing Korean population - Oklahoma, for instance - Korean restaurants tend to group around military bases, as many members of the military have experienced that food in its native environment and crave it. Also I think you see situations where Korean people have located to those cities due to marriage to a service member, etc. We never experienced a large migration from Korea in Oklahoma City like we did from Vietnam and SE Asian countries, and of course Chinese people have been in OKC and throughout the country for more than a century. I'll tell you another ethnic food type I would like to see emerge here: Malaysian. I have a friend from there who likes to host parties where she mixes American and Malaysian cuisine, and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Very different than anything else I have experienced.

Banana Island was as close as we had to Malaysian. Unfortunately a location, and ownership, change has seen it go downhill.

Daebek K is still moving forward; they should be submitting their building permits soon and hope to start work right after the first of the year. They wanted to get Covell Park in Edmond open (sister restaurant to Guernsey Park) first.

I'm really excited about this project, both the food and the design.

I was starting to wonder about this.... Drive by that lot 3-4 times a week and think to myself "Some Korean BBQ sure would be good.".

This is one restaurant I am really excited to try when it opens. If it ever opens...

    Any updates?

They have been busy opening Covell Park in Edmond but was told just a couple of weeks ago they will soon turn their focus to this project.

Any word on this? Covell Park has been open log enough now. Pretty similar looking to Guyutes, and seeing how well that place has done this weekend, I would imagine this would have much the same effect.
