Thread: Peanut oil?

  1. #1

    Default Peanut oil?

I have to check almost any place I go to make sure they don't use peanut oil to fry in (I don't die from them, just feel bad/flu-like for about a day), and I'm sure others have this problem as well.

Maybe start a list of places that use peanut oil for frying (disappointedly walked out of Five Guys when I saw their sign - what's the point of having a burger if you can't have fries with it )? Some places post it prominently, some don't. So here's my start, please add it to it if you wish...

    Arbuckle Fried Pies
    Five Guys
    Chick-fil-A

Peanut oil is supposed to be good for you, better than the others. Why do you not like it? Are you allergic to peanuts? I didn't realize that peanut oil was bad for people that had allergies even if they are allergic to peanuts.

People that have peanut allergies are allergic to anything made from peanuts.

I thought peanut oil was excluded from that for some reason, but I guess not.

Nope... Depending on the severity of the allergy. Just walking into a place using peanut oil to fry could cause respiratory issues from the oil getting in the air and being inhaled..

I have a friend who is allergic to bananas. She can't even walk through the produce section of a grocery store without having a mild reaction.

Beware of any establishment--in the modern age--waving Confederate Flags and featuring Fried Food.
Unless you happen to be lookin' fer a burger in Vian at a place called Bubba's.

In which case, it may be appropriate to journey on down the road to "Chair Crushers BBQ" on the outskirts of Henryetta.
For just desserts. (via the old bypass highway =)

Yeah, sorry, didn't actually put "allergic to peanuts" in the post. I can eat things fried in peanut oil, but not very many. Had Zapp's Sweet Potato Chips in NOLA on my first trip (of many) there, loved them, ordered some more when I got back home, along with a bunch of other flavors. Got a big box and was bummed to read "peanut oil" on the non-sweet-potato chips (the sweet potato chips weren't fried in it, so I had no idea they did it with their other chips). They tasted really really really good, so I couldn't just toss about 12 bags of chips in multiple flavors out the door. Found out I could eat about 5-6 chips at a time without feeling too bad, took forever to finish them all, but it was worth it.

Nope. Wouldn't go to Chick-fil-A even if I wasn't allergic to peanut oil, though, don't agree with some of the things they do. Oh wait, that's political, sorry, nevermind...

Ha, well, to each their own. I just happen to love their chicken and am sad for you that you couldn't enjoy it if you wanted to. It's delicious.

Indeed they did, hadn't kept up with it, just checked, thanks for the info. Still can't eat there, though.

From Food Allergy Research and Education
The FDA exempts highly refined peanut oil from being labeled as an
allergen. Studies show that most individuals with peanut allergy can
safely eat peanut oil (but not cold-pressed, expelled or extruded peanut
oil – sometimes represented as gourmet oils). If you are allergic to
peanuts, ask your doctor whether or not you should avoid peanut oil.

This is off the topic of Peanut oil, but CFA did not changed their position. Rather, they made the descision not mix social beliefs with business. As they position themselves to move into larger markets, they don't need the negative publicity.
