It's time to put an end to the Weather Closing scroll

The weather closing scroll has reached it's end of life. It is no longer an efficient method to notify people of various closings. It's ineffectiveness is made worse by the TV stations allowing just about anyone report a closing regardless of the size of the impact. Because of this, the scroll can take up to an hour to complete A-Z.

Agreed, but who gets their closure broadcast and who doesn't? I think the TV channels want to do it because it increases their relevance, although with so many names it has the opposite effect by making the scroll entirely meaningless.

There are still people out there, believe it or not, who don't have Internet. Those people still rely on the weather closing scroll.

The scroll doesn't bother me. I grew up with it so whatever. What does get to me is wasting space. Above the scroll you can put "Closed" or "Closed Friday" and then scroll all the school names under it. You don't have to list the school name and also put Closed/Closed Random Day to make the scroll twice a long. Also business and organizations need to be removed from the crawl. Refer people to the website or to call their place of interest - stop wasting space on TV for 40,923 difference organizations.

Not to mention people that don't have smartphones that don't allow them to access this type of information.

I'm sure it would also hypothetically result in some areas seeing more droughts and others seeing more floods. lol

Most schools have a robocall and or a prerecorded hotline system these days so really don't need to scroll the closings. I would not be surprised if some schools are sending mass text messages out as well.
