Good for them. And smart, too.

Well let's see, thanks to a tax credit passed by Congress on Jan 1, 2013 Starbucks will be pocketing at least $5600 per new hire. If the Vet is long-term unemployed or disabled it goes to $9,600. So Starbucks could pocket $96,000,000 in taxpayer money, and this whole time I thought Howard Schultz was a liberal.

Receive a Tax Credit of up to $9600 for Every Eligible Veteran Hired

How can your organization claim a tax credit for hiring veterans?
On January 1, 2013, Congress passed a bill that extended the Returning Heroes and Wounded Warrior Tax Credits through December 31, 2013. The Returning Heroes Tax Credit provides incentives of up to $5,600 for hiring unemployed veterans, and the Wounded Warriors Tax Credit doubles the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for long-term unemployed veterans with service-connected disabilities, to up to $9,600. There is no limit to the number of qualified veterans for whom you can claim this credit.

    Who is an eligible veteran?
    Returning Heroes Tax Credit

•Short-term Unemployed: A new credit of 40% of the first $6,000 of wages (up to $2,400) for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment insurance or compensation for at least 4 weeks.

•Long-term Unemployed: A new credit of 40% of the first $14,000 of wages (up to $5,600) for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment insurance or compensation for longer than 6 months.

•Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: Maintains the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for veterans with service-connected disabilities hired within one year of being discharged from the military. The credit is 40% of the first $12,000 of wages (up to $4,800).

•Long-Term Unemployed Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: A new credit of 40% of the first $24,000 of wages (up to $9,600) for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been in receipt of unemployment insurance or compensation for longer than 6 months.
Meanwhile, back at the farm 10,000 non-veterans just found out they were second-class citizens.

Prunie ed: I'm not a fan of Starbucks. This seemed important.
    What is "this"?
    (oh those pesky pronouns)

As a Vet I think this is cool. Being disabled and old my vet reward is long gone. All starbucks coffee taste the same to me. I still by my coffee from the guy who owned coffee classics at penn square. he still runs it out of his home.

I only order Caffe Americano. It's the only thing I like.

I'll have to ask John next time I'm over there. I always get Guatemalan Antigua whole bean. The smell of grinding (burr grinder only) right before you make it is a double blessing. Starts any day off pretty good.

Come on, we worship vets like heroes. But only during football games, reality tv shows, and politician photo ops. Lets make the civil-military divide even worse.

You forgot about giving up the good seats on airplanes. I just think it is a bad idea for the government to pay employers to hire a very specific type of person, especially veterans - cough cough Starship Troopers cough cough.

I agree; I'd prefer that if anything, e government spend the money preparing veterans better to leave the service. When I got out, they had a program, but it was pretty mediocre and you really had to harass the chain of command to attend it.

Oh the irony seeing as how the military recruits teenagers promising them that they will learn valuable job skills that are in demand in the private sector. I was in the Army 6 years and I have yet to see how my MOS (31U) is even applicable in the private sector.

It's at least as useful as my 11B.
