EDMOND — Economic development and sports enthusiasm is on the rise with the new $15 million Summit Sports Complex.

Community leaders were presented with the official unveiling Wednesday of the complex that is being developed on the northeast corner of Interstate 35. The Edmond Planning Commission approved the site plan 4-0 this week.

The groundbreaking for the 55,000-square-foot facility is anticipated in the spring and will it open during the summer of 2015, said Brad Lund, who is part of the Summit management team with Sold Out Strategies.

Summit Sports Complex will house eight basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts and two indoor soccer fields under one roof,” Lund said. Food service, office space, meeting space as well as medical and physical therapy will be housed in the facility.

“It is a dream come true for us,” said Mark Herrin, representing Oklahoma Peak Performance Volleyball.

OPPV represents 31 teams this year, he said. Many of the players are from Edmond and will have top-notch training at Summit, he said. The facility will attract players from all across the U.S., he added.

“Summit Sports, we believe, is the final missing piece that will allow us to take this to a national level,” Herrin said.

Indoor space in this region of the U.S. is needed, said Tim McLaughlin, majority owner of the new North American Soccer League set to play in the spring of 2015.

EDMOND, Oklahoma - It's being called one of the top premier indoor sports facilities and it's right here in Oklahoma.
Wednesday, organizers unveiled their plans for the Summit Sports Complex. It will be located on the northeast corner of Covell and I-35 in Edmond.

The facility will house eight basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts and two indoor soccer fields.

Construction crews are set to break ground next spring. It's scheduled to open by summer 2015"

KFOR did a segment on this yesterday.. it looks pretty awesome. They talked quite a bit about the plans for sport camps for inner city kids, and also the hope to get tournaments here.

I have got to say, a 10-15 minute bus ride is a lot more feasible.

It's got to be. Wouldn't the soccer fields be over 30ksf alone? The 8 bball courts would also be another 30k, and there are other things in there like concessions and such..

This is Edmond's building that they are choosing to build and we as a community supported it. I support it!

99.99% of people I know own a car and I'm sure the city link bus will run to it. Obviously it will continue as the city grows. As long as people continue to invest in their community and have pride, the area will be great for years to come even when the sprawl occurs further out than it already is.

EDMOND — Plans were unveiled Wednesday for a $15 million indoor sports complex developers say will make Edmond and the metro a high-profile venue for youth sports.

Although 18 months from a projected completion, hopes are high the 155,000-square-foot Summit Sports Complex will turn Edmond into a destination spot for youth tournaments. That should translate into higher sales tax revenues from visitors patronizing restaurants, hotels and other businesses, city leaders said.

Making the announcement at the Downtown Community Center was Brad Lund of Sold Out Strategies, who helped Summit Sports Management with business plans and its business model. The city saw increased revenue in June when it hosted the U.S. Youth Soccer Region III championships, which drew thousands of players and spectators, most from outside of Oklahoma.

The Summit Sports Complex will be built at Interstate 35 and Covell, on land owned by the city and leased to Summit Sports Management Inc.

Plans call for eight regulation basketball courts, 16 regulation volleyball courts, two indoor soccer fields, fitness and personal training, medical and physical therapy services, 25,000 square feet of viewing and lounge space and space for casual dining.

The idea for the center was born two years ago by local developers Davis Hudiburg and Derek Turner, who is also the Oklahoma Christian Schools high school football coach. Turner said he already has been contacted by youth sports officials across the country about scheduling tournaments at Summit Sports. Groundbreaking is scheduled for spring.

Last year the city bought the 19 acres for just more than $2 million, Edmond Mayor Charles Lamb said. The agreement calls for Summit Sports to buy the land in 15 years, if not before, Lamb said"

Yes, I think this facility would be a lot better off somewhere along Broadway Extension, like where the Thunder practice facility is. Why it's on I-35 in that particular place is beyond me. Good for Edmond but bad for inner city kids (and when I say inner city kids, I'm talking about OKC kids, not low income Edmond kids) trying to find transportation in a city that has horrible transportation options!

All laughs and facts and sarcasm aside, OKC kids don't all live downtown. PluPan may know a ton of lower income kids that have access to vehicles and that's great. Point being that inner city/low income OKC kids that may want to get to this facility +/-20 miles away from wherever they live are still going to have to find a ride to your FREE City Link Bus.

Well, how many square miles is OKC? By your criteria there's no real location that will fit everyone.

That being said, the facility is 15 miles from 23rd and MLK. I'd say those kids would have as much chance of getting to this facility as anywhere else in the city, unless it was built right there (which it never would be). This isn't meant to be a community center where kids will go to every day after school.

It's amazing to me that no matter how beneficial and good this will be for the community, people nit pick and criticize the smallest details. They say they'd like to have youth camps for inner city kids, a good thing, yet people criticize that it's not walking distance to their homes. If they need/want to get there, they will get there. Plus the fact that it's in Edmond probably makes people sore. Any other suburb and it would be praised
