How many posts are required before a moderator has to approve?

I didn't see anything about this in the FAQs, so sorry if this is actually covered some place.

How many posts are required before moderator approval is needed to actually post?

Is this a forum, buy forum thing?

I noticed in this Announcements & Help Desk forum I was able to post immediately.

3 approved posts before 'member' is converted to 'participating member' automatically, but sometimes we just switch it before 3, as we have done with you.

It's to prevent spam.
