Thread: Your thoughts on Miley Cryus at the VMAs?

  1. Default Re: Your thoughts on Miley Cryus at the VMAs?

Who would have thought Gaga would be the tame one these days?

She got what she wanted...people talking about her. Congrats on helping her succeed. Mmm hit it on the nose too...the outrage over Elvis was huge back in the day (WELLLLL before my time mind you). I'm not comparing Mylie to Elvis, just that it is all perspective. Was this really unexpected? We are talking about the same performer that used a stripper pole during a performance at the Kids Choice Awards on Nickelodeon a few years back.

Maybe the kids should be encouraged to find a different role model. As stated here before, who has said Miley should be a role model for younger kids? Just because she was on a Disney show, she should have some moral obligation to be an appropriate role model for kids?

I saw it and yeah it was pretty bad. Not because she was scantily dressed though. If you want to wear practically nothing at least be artistic or sexy about it. You can't "twerk" with flabby butt cheeks squeezed in some awkward looking latex thing. I think I was more upset by the fact she had zero rhythm more than anything else. Heck Maddona and Lady Gaga have probably done way worse, but at least they come off somewhat artistic and look good doing it.

By the way, what's up with these "the youngs are messed up" threads lately? I should probably start a thread entitled "Bored Grandpas" to balance everything out :-).

From my perspective the only folks who have any obligation to be role models are parents. Miley, Charles Barkley, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, etc. have no obligation, moral or otherwise to be a role mode for kids.

"Oldtimers" is kicking in and they are forgetting about the "scandals" of their youth.

You hit the nail on head - and guess what - kids do find new role models which why is Miley is turning to stunts like this to stay 'relevant'. The 'Disney' model is a hard path for the 'child star'. When Miley (or any number of other Disney stars) move beyond the age demographic Disney targets they discard them and get someone new. The former 'relevant' star now finds themselves with no audience as their former tinybooper fans grow up with out them. Since these stars were 'made' by the Disney machine, they are left totally abandoned once Disney turns their attention to a new child. Throw in some crappy parents and presto - Miley Circus.

The next girl to 'outrage' us is Bridgit Claire Mendler. Just give her about 3 more years.

I never watch that junk, and who gives a crap about Miley Cyrus?.

I caught a quick glimpse of the story on News Channel 4's "The Rant" as we were heading out to the library with my daughter. ... Kevin Ogle was comparing Miley Cyrus to Elvis Presley... as if there could be any comparison.

Elvis Presley had more class at twenty years old than Miley Cyrus ever will.

Plus ... Elvis could actually sing.

To compare the two is just blind ignorance. It is the continual degradation and the acceptance that is worrisome. If you can't tell the difference between the two and how far it has come, not to mention how far it will go, then you are part of the generation that sees nothing wrong with declining values. Elvis was crude for the time. Miley is crude for this time. I guess we will wait to see how low we go and what we consider crude and vulgur in 20 more years. Your point only emphasizes that as a society we are much more accepting of much more vulgar activity.

I know this is an old fashioned view, but I don't think morals and proper behavior ever go out of style. But there will always be parents who don't care enough or know enough to teach and reinforce good behavior for their children. It is just sad.

It is not that we are forgetting about the scandals of our youth. Many of us did stupid things. That doesn't make what is happening now smart or right.

This show is a very extensive production. Hours and hours of rehearsal and writing is done for the performances and it is all part of the plan. It's weird to me how people are reacting to the performance, buying into exactly what the producers wanted. Talking about the VMAs, and getting people to search for it on the internet. The era of hashtag marketing is extremely easy when everyone and their grandma is talking about the same thing.

To the OP, do you know what the term literally means?
At least no producer thought it would look even cuter, if the guy she sang with was also very sparsely dressed in flesh color to match her.

Within 5-6 yrs she will be dead, in porn or completely forgotten about.
And if she waits 7 more years she can be a full fledged member of the "27 club".

Didn't watch it live, but saw her performance after all the buzz. The whole shock-value performance for attention bit is tired, but it got people talking about her like it was intended to do. No publicity is bad publicity, right? My overall take-away - she seems a little desperate for relevance.

She's just trying to get a little attention by being raunchy...... she's just an ugly little twit in retrospect, and her actions made her worse.

I'm not condoning what she did at all...and think it was pretty raunchy. However, that fact that it is getting so much negative attention shows that morals aren't really declining at an alarming rate. People still don't approve but it gets the attention and that's what they want. Not to pick on him, but look at Panda's response...he got turned on. He's an 18/19 year old that is pretty will in the age range of her target audience. She doesn't care what those of us over 30 are going to think. If her performance can make the teenage boys feels all tingly down there and continue to secure her female audience by being a "rebel woman" (or whatever you want to call it)...she'll keep doing it. It all comes down to sex appeal. At some point society will grow up and mature and move past the giggly phase. When we get to the point where society as a whole can reject performance like this, but also desexualize a woman's breasts and remove the taboo of basic human bodily functions...then we'll be a whole lot better. Then perhaps we'll see performances like this get shunned and artists move away from resorting to such tactics.

At the end of the day it is our fault because she is playing to what the audience wants.

I wasn't shocked because it was provocative, I was shocked at how talentless Miley Cyrus is.

Why because she's an enterainer and all entertainers die at 25 or become porn stars? I have a hunch you've never listened to MC or watch MTV so not sure why you're so worked up and confident of her demise in 5 years. Next thing you know is she'll be getting a tattoo *gasp*

You sound like a proud member of her fan club no?
It was talentless trash and void of any redeeming value for other then shock value. With any luck we can get her an early admittance to the 27 club so my eyes/ears wont be defiled like that again.
O and this is just for you.....

And as someone said long ago...."its only rock and roll"...or a pale pale imitation.

I guess the same could be said of drug dealers and pornographers.... it must be okay because some people like it. What a standard. There is no "wrong" as long as there is a crowd to see it.

Nope, I've never heard her sing before this performance but just because a person doesn't care for her music to say she'll be dead or a porn star in 5 years makes me literally go throw up in the bathroom.

and with all entertainment, if you don't like it don't watch/listen to it. There is a channel/station changer close by

People who get worked up over something silly like the VMA's are the same people who expect teachers/coaches/nannies/etc to raise their kids for them. They want responsibility deflected onto somebody else. 90% of them are probably stuffing processed food down their child's throat every day too. Parents are the problem.

I don't watch MTV, but people at work were talking about it. Someone showed me the video and I just thought it was kind of blah. Yeah it's sexual and all, but I'm actually old enough to buy real porn.

If people weren't trying to raise their own kids why would they complain about this? I think you got it backwards. One the other hand, a good parent probably wouldn't let their kids watch MTV to begin with so maybe you do have a point. Then again - I don't know how you go from Hannah Montana to this without setting something on fire and sticking it in your mouth.
