Sea of Tree's from The Earth's Story's Facebook page

    Sea of Trees

At the base of Mount Fuji, Japan is where you can find a 35 square km forest called, Aokigahara (commonly referred to as the Sea of Trees).

The trees of this forest are so closely packed together that they actually limit the amount of wind that can pass through. There is also an eerie absence of wildlife. Because of this the forest is actually extremely quiet.

The base or floor of the forest is primarily made up of strong volcanic rock covered with moss. The 864 AD eruption of Mount Fuji transformed the landscape, creating a network of chasms below the volcanic rock. Over the years, large trees have grown so densely that they actually permit very little light to pass through. Some report that midday may even be mistaken for the early hours of the evening.

The Sea of Trees is also referred to as the Suicide Forest. With an average of about 100 suicides per year, it is the world’s second most popular site for suicides.

Very creepy, but a beautiful forest at the least!

How cool is this? One guy planted over 1,000 acres of forest over a span of 30 years!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!

"A little over 30 years ago, a teenager named Jadav “Molai” Payeng began burying seeds along a barren sandbar near his birthplace in northern India’s Assam region to grow a refuge for wildlife. Not long after, he decided to dedicate his life to this endeavor, so he moved to the site where he could work full-time creating a lush new forest ecosystem. Incredibly, the spot today hosts a sprawling 1,360 acre of jungle that Payeng planted single-handedly."

The core of our planet is hotter than previously thought. It turns out, the Earth's core is actually 6,000 degrees Celsius as opposed to 5,000.

Scientists have determined the temperature near the Earth's centre to be 6000 degrees Celsius, 1000 degrees hotter than in a previous experiment run 20 years ago. These measurements confirm geophysical models that the temperature difference between the solid core and the mantle above, must be at least 1500 degrees to explain why the Earth has a magnetic field. The scientists were even able to establish why the earlier experiment had produced a lower temperature figure.

A new LED street lamp is aimed at reducing light pollution in cities.

Researchers believe they have come up with a new type of LED-powered streetlamp that could radically reduce light pollution.

Current designs "leak" large amounts of light in unwanted directions, obscuring views of the stars, wasting energy and making it harder for drivers to see.

The team, based in Mexico and Japan, said they believed their solution was the "best ever reported".

Land Curiosity Rover down on Mars: First order of business, draw a giant pen*s(for some reason it won't let me type the medical term for a male genital)! lol

NASA's high-tech Curiosity rover may be getting a little cheeky over there on Mars.

In a photo of Curiosity's track patterns, published on the robotics section of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory site, the Mars rover appears to have traced out a very phallic design on the Red Planet's dusty surface.

The rover's picture went viral after being posted to Reddit's r/funny subreddit page Tuesday, earning close to 40,000 "upvotes" in a matter of a few hours. According to The Huffington Post UK, NASA's website crashed due to increased traffic as word of the "drawing" spread.

The river is famous to the fish.

The loud voice is famous to silence,
which knew it would inherit the earth
    before anybody said so.

The cat sleeping on the fence is famous to the birds
    watching him from the birdhouse.

The tear is famous, briefly, to the cheek.

The idea you carry close to your bosom
    is famous to your bosom.

The boot is famous to the earth,
more famous than the dress shoe,
which is famous only to floors.

The bent photograph is famous to the one who carries it
and not at all famous to the one who is pictured.

I want to be famous to shuffling men
    who smile while crossing streets,
    sticky children in grocery lines,
famous as the one who smiled back.

I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous,
or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular,
but because it never forgot what it could do.

"We all have good and bad days. Next time you're having a bad one, just remember that this thing exists and I promise you'll feel a lot better.:

''Not all nights in the Amazon are pitch black. When the full moon takes to the sky, it can even become light enough to see shadows inside the rainforest. On nights such as these, you barely need a flashlight in the clearings or along the shore of the river. Certain birds also call more often during the full moon.

Spectacled and Tawny-bellied Screech Owls can be heard as they call near the lodges. Spix’s Guan, a large arboreal turkey-like bird, frequently calls on nights such as these. Some of the strangest sounds, though, are made by the potoos. Bizarre, nocturnal birds that are rarely seen during the day, they reveal their presence with eerie vocalizations that carry for long distances. The Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus) gives a mournful series of whistled notes that go down in scale. The huge Great Potoo (Nyctibius grandis) utters loud squawks and a deep guttural sound that has frightened many a guest and given rise to folktales throughout its range. Deep inside the forest, the strange call of the Long-tailed Potoo (Nyctibius aethereus) is also occasionally heard.

Here are some facts about these strange fascinating Amazonian creatures:
Potoos have highly cryptic plumage: Potoos are only active at night and thus sleep during the day. Like most other nocturnal birds, they also have plumage that acts as camouflage and gives them the appearance of a piece of tree bark or broken off stump.

Wide, large mouths: Although potoos have small beaks, their mouths are huge. They have such wide, large mouths to aid them in catching moths, beetles, and other insects during the night.

The Common Potoo cries for the moon: According to legend, the call of the Common Potoo is the mournful lament of a spirit in love with but separated from the spirit of the moon.

No nest: Potoos do lay a single egg but place it in the nook of a branch or broken off stem instead of building an actual nest made of sticks.
How to see potoo species when visiting Tambopata on an Amazon adventure tour:
Ask guides about sites for potoos: The guides who work for Rainforest Expeditions make efforts to keep up on recent sightings of monkeys, eagles, frogs and other interesting animals such as potoos. If the roosting site of a potoo is known, they will be happy to show you one of these strange birds.

Watch for them on moonlit nights: Since potoos tend to call more on clear, moonlit nights, they are also easier to locate at such times. Listen for their calls and see if you can go on a night walk with a guide to track them down. Great Potoos often call from and perch on snags that stick up above the forest canopy.

Look for odd lumps on branches: Although it is very difficult to find potoos during the day, “lumps” on branches and the tips of dead snags occasionally turn out to be roosting potoos after carefully checking them with binoculars.

Hear potoos call during the Amazonian night and look for them during the day on a tour to the Peruvian jungle with Rainforest Expeditions.''

London isn't famous for hot weather, but that may change soon, and not because of global warming: The design of a new skyscraper in the city is melting cars and setting buildings on fire.

"It's absolutely ruined," Martin Lindsay told the BBC, referring to his Jaguar XJ. Lindsay had the misfortune of parking his luxury car across the street from the office building for an hour; the Jaguar now has melted panels, mirrors and other parts. "You can't believe something like this would happen. They've got to do something about it."

Local shopkeepers have complained about carpets catching fire and smoldering front doors. A restaurant owner told London news site City A.M. that slate tiles on his doorstep had shattered in the heat. [Spooky! Top 10 Unexplained Phenomena]

The building — designed by internationally renowned architect Rafael Viñoly — is a dramatic edifice with curved exterior walls. Built at 20 Fenchurch Street in London's financial center, the 38-story skyscraper is known locally as "the Walkie-Talkie" for its unusual shape.

But that curvilinear shape is exactly what's causing the problem: The south-facing exterior wall is covered in reflective glass, and because it's concave, it focuses the sun's rays onto a small area, not unlike the way a magnifying glass directs sunbeams onto a superhot pinpoint of light.

Haha, that's funny. I've seen a few articles on that and was going to post about it, but didn't have time. Really interesting to see what they do. I wonder if there is some kind of film or tint they can apply on the glass to reduce the glare.

''Even on the eclectic list of underground homes on the market (like a converted missile silo or a $53 million six-story hacienda), this Las Vegas bunker is unique.
Built during the Cold War, when being vaporized by Russian nukes was an imminent fear of many Americans, the subterranean palace is pure 1970s-era luxury.

The late Girard “Jerry” G. Henderson, an entrepreneur who had an interest in technology and a strong desire to protect his family from the atom bomb, spent millions creating the perfect nuclear hideaway. Now his 16,000-square-foot underground house, situated in southeast Las Vegas at 3970 Spencer St., is on the market. (Click here to go to the listing.)
Henderson, who made his fortune at Avon Products, hired Kenneth and Jay Swayze to build the property for $10 million in 1978. The Swayze brothers' Underground World Homes, inspired by visions of an apocalypse, designed many clandestine hideaways, including Henderson’s previous home near Boulder, Colo.
Surrounded by rusty iron gates, the aboveground portion of the Las Vegas house (top left photo) is 2,800 square feet that sits on a 1-acre lot. It fits in comfortably with the surrounding properties. But take an elevator down 26 feet beneath the ground and you’ll find another house--this one truly built to last.

In fact, the home has been preserved in all its 1970s-era glory, including a now-retro kitchen (lower left photo), bright pink walls and a fake backyard fit for the Brady Bunch.
The listing agent, Winston King of Kingly Properties, believes that Henderson and his team thought of pretty much everything a person could want. (Scroll down for a video tour.)
At the center of the green carpet meant to mimic grass is a 6,000-square-foot home: three bedrooms, three baths, a laundry room, a dining room and a large kitchen, featuring era-appropriate gadgetry, such as a toaster built into the wall. Click here or on the images above to go to a slideshow.
The property includes many amenities and options for entertaining: a heated pool (lower right photo), two Jacuzzis, a sauna, two spas and a working fireplace, as well as a wet bar, a stage, a dance floor and a putting green.

The barbecue grill, hidden in an artificial rock (upper right photo), ventilates through the artificial trees. A remote-controlled lighting system simulates whatever time of day you’d like it to be.
“It was built to last forever,” King said. “Of course, nothing does, but it was built that way.”
As you might expect from a subterranean home, the building is full of highly personal aesthetic choices. The taste of the homeowner can be spotted throughout, including the murals painted on the walls of the “backyard,” depicting the places Henderson had lived—from Los Angeles, Colorado and New Jersey a sheep ranch he owned in New Zealand. For the three years the artist worked on the murals, she lived in Henderson’s guest house, also underground.

The builders estimated that someone could live solely in the house for at least a year, although the extensive pantry might need to be restocked.
Back in the 1990s, the home was listed for $8 million. Now this bank-owned curiosity is on the market for $1.7 million.
King said it would be a smart place for a musician to build a recording studio, or it could be a quiet hideaway for the super-rich.
Corporations have expressed interest in buying it for parties and other events. A Chinese buyer recently flew in from Hawaii to take a look, interested in booking tours and charging admission, but that didn’t work out. King estimated that the basement could hold roughly 100 people.
Why hasn’t it sold yet? “Hey, it’s underground,” King said. “It needs a special person.”

Quake creates new Island off Gwadar coast

The earthquake was so powerful that it caused the seabed to rise and create a small, mountain-like island about 600 meters (yards) off Gwadar coastline in the Arabian Sea.

A 30 to 40 feet high mountain-like island has emerged at western coast of Gwadar as result of the earthquake, Mozzam Jah, Deputy Inspector General Police Gwadar said.

He said a large number of people are gathered to witness the rare phenomenon.
