Thread: El Tapatio

    Northeast OKC El Tapatio

Ok, I'm waiting on you Stillwater (or former Stillwater) folks to tell us about El Tapatio. They just opened up at 1000 N. E. 63rd. I'm not sure, but I think that's 63d and Kelley. It's fairly close to home for me so I want to give it a try if it's not a fast food place.
    Thanks,
    C. T.

Go for it. IMO, El Tap is the best okie mex restaurant in Stillwater. It's doesn't really compare well to other offerings in the big city, but I like it. It's also fairly inexpensive. Give it a shot.

I just passed that location in OKC. I don't go over there and wasn't sure how long it had been. I agree that it is probably the best Mexican in Stillwater (which isn't saying much in my opinion), but it is inexpensive and will be similar to your typical Tex-Mex.

I have had lunch there a couple of times and it was good. The prices are really reasonable, too, which is a bonus.

Thanks for the comments. I'm convinced and will give it a shot.

I have tried it (today) and it's pretty good, not great, but when I mentioned it to a couple of friends that attended OSU, they went nuts. The prices are reasonable, they have a good menu and the people are very friendly. I will go back.

I enjoyed it when i lived in stillwater. I dont think its is super great tex mex but it was good and the options were lacking in stillwater (atleast at the time). We always went there over mexico joes or el chico but that isnt saying a whole lot.

Like CTChandler said i think people who lived in stillwater will love it just because it was the local go to place.

I went there Saturday at 5:00 pm and it was closed. Anyone know what the deal is. They had a sign on the door saying they are not serving alcohol or beer right now. I wonder if this has something to do with it being closed. The hours of operation listed Saturday hours.

We ate at the El Tapatio in Durant on our recent "Fall Foliage" drive. It was recommended by the girl at the desk of the hotel at which we stayed. We've been a bit spoiled by Casa Perico, but El Tapatio was actually very good. Until stumbling across this thread, while looking for something else, I didn't realize there was an El Tapatio in OKC. Is it still around?

    Yes, it is.

Good to know. Thanks! We'll have to see how it compares to the Durant location.
(ps: my wife and I are closet paseofreaks too. =)

Then you surely have never before been to Palomino's and El Vaquiro in Stillwater. They're owned by the same Mexican family. The food and atmosphere, in those two places is definitely better than in either El Tapatio.

At Palomino's the peach margarita is very nice. It's just like at the Texas Roadhouse. However, the heads of fighting roosters facing each other painted in the dome of Palomino's may offend some people. Palomino's needs to fix their huge three tiered fountain, since it is the focal point of the restaurant. Even though that restaurant is only several years old, it's already noticeable that it is not being well taken care of.

El Tapatio is good. It's just those other two places are better.

RM, I did some poking around on the Internet and it appears that the Stillwater/OKC El Tapatio are not affiliated with the mini chain located in North Texas and South Oklahoma. That said, I will leave Paseo for good Mexican.

Thank you for that. Apparently "El Tapatio" isn't a label for a restaurant worthy of screams of outrage involving copyright infringement. =)
And I'm glad about that. Because that nice, little, local place down there in Durant might get in trouble if it was.
Hopefully, San Antonio won't ever litigate against OKC over the term: Paseo. =)
(again, thanks! and my wife and I really do love "The Paseo' in OKC . . . what was the name of that fellow who loved it enough to start restoring it to better than its original coolness . . .?)

John Lampton Belt, God rest his soul. Fancied himself a benevolent dictator, I think.

Well . . . at least he was "benevolent" rather than the alternative sort of "dictator" . . . =)
(sorry. i simply think that the spark he ignited regarding the restoration of the former slum known as "the Paseo" (that I marveled at, even before his involvement in the local renaissance, potential-wise, had a net positive effect. and this thread is about El Tapatio. sorry for the digression.)
