P180 Greenery

While perusing the amazing collection of images from the Metro Jacksonville article photo gallery, I noticed a number of downtown pics that showed some lovely greenery and foliage that (to me anyway) looked new and that I assume is resultant from Project 180 work. I'm referring to an apparent new density of trees, potted plants, signage, and other little curbside details.

Now some of this may have been there before. But, to my eyes anyway, a lot of it looks fresh and new. I'll leave it to the folks actually living and/or working downtown to say for sure. In any event, these pics are worth a look anyway because they're gorgeous.

Looking at these pics, I just have to say -- OKC, you're looking beautiful!

I really love the amount of green that is being added to our downtown. It truly changes the overall look of the place and is a huge net positive. Keep it up!!!

However, we need more trees all over the city. I was just at Raleigh/Durham Airport and it was like a botanical garden driving into the airport. While there have been notable improvements over the past few years, much more needs to be done. The same goes for other gateways (particularly on the south and west side) and a ton of the new neighborhood developments. I am always preaching we need more trees in the city and will probably continue to do so!

Absolutely every bit of greenery in those photos is NOT from Project 180 except the last photo.

It was all existing prior and/or will be replaced when P180 ultimately gets to those sectors/streets.

So your saying all these mature tall trees are going to be replaced with new baby ones? Don't see any logic in that...I'm all for P180, but I only support it because of the new greenery that is put in streets that didn't have it before.

Good grief! P180 absolutely should not remove the well maintained mature trees. This is sheer lunacy. All they need to do is make over the streets into the P180 scheme and work around the existing plants. As far as I am concerned they should not even touch the area between the Sheraton and Renaissance.

Yeah if they remove those trees that will prove that these people behind P180 are monkeys whom are to afraid to venture out of their natural habitat to see what the real story is!!!!!!!!

If I remember correctly, those blocks of Broadway were removed from the P180 projects list.

I hope you are correct especially about the trees and plants. I think they should change the signs and other items to match the rest of the CBD, but leave the well developed tree canopy alone.

Agree! Great pictures too! The foliage and flora is starting to look great in downtown OKC. One suggestion I have is would love to see more diverse trees planted especially the "Southern" live oak" which would grow in this region zone. They do not go barren in the winter and while the leaves drop they rejuvenate with new ones rather quickly. These trees do grow somewhat slow but can live for hundreds of years and grow into stately, beautiful trees! They do not require lots of water.

I seriously doubt that is going to happen in spite of what took place in the Civic Center Park.

I would think the only reason it happened at Centennial was so that the Park could actually be programmed.

I would doubt they take the same approach to Robinson and Broadway given the budget constraints and the fact that Jeff Speck said those were our most walkable streets pre Project 180. If the budget is that bad, why couldn't they repaint the streets, replace street furniture, and change out the lighting fixtures? No need to move utilities, replace trees, etc.

LOL those photos do a pretty good job of bolstering JTF's claim that most pictures of downtown Oklahoma City streets and sidewalks look like they are from a zombie movie, or cataclysm aftermath, or after the Rapture...or something. The sidewalks are almost universally deserted.

I'd like to think it's from Stephen King's "The Langoliers". Just waiting for the future!
