    Paging bluedog on this one...

Funny story about this place. So I'm at dinner with Mr. JDM at Mickey Mantles one night. It's not terribly long after MM opened. He's telling us of some "issues" they'd had there when they first opened. Apparently the granite floor in the bathrooms had to be DE-buffed because they were so reflective, one could see the person in the next toilet by reflection. Obviously that was problematic from the honest mistake, and not-so-honest-mistake sides. Bwahaha.

Quentin Remy and Steve Blair were the design architects when they were still at Benham, they now office in the building. I was involved from part way into the DD phase through the completion of construction of the shell building. Blair/Remy had already left Benham at that point.

The base building interiors were done by Dr. McKean's interior designer, Mickey Mantle was done by Design Collaborative Dallas (they had done the other Kirby's Steakhouses in the DFW area) and I can't remember who did Studio54. All we did interior wise at Benham was coordinate the interior design with the building and systems.

Thanks bluedog! Do you recall the cost of the renovations by any chance?

I think it was 5.4M, that seems to be the number that I remember. The top floor was added during our project to the original cast-in-place concrete structure to increases the building by a floor.

Gail Armstrong Construction was the general contractor.

I will track down some of my pics during construction that I had posted on the old site and post them in the thread.

Thanks! I remember those pics from the old okmet.org.. but I'm confident that this will be better. Adding that info now..

Any update on the SKYY Bar location? It's been closed for probably a year or more now and no sign of a new operator. Steve mentioned the possibility of Mickey Mantles expanding into it several months back but we haven't heard anything more.

I wish I knew! That spot has so much potential to be something great. Skyy bar just let it go to crap for years on end and never made any improvements. Had a buddy in college that worked at Skyy bar for over 5 years. He had no idea they were closing. The staff just got an email one day saying they were out of business.

At the very least, you'd think someone could operate it as an event space.

    Per Steve's chat:

Steve Lackmeyer 10:53 a.m. I've been told it will reopen as "an upscale lounge."

It's better than a nightclub right? Plus, OKC doesn't really have a lot of the kind of upscale lounges that I've been to in big cities. If done right this could be something special. If done wrong of course it could be a huge flop. I'm interested to see what comes of it.

I wish Makers could/would make a comeback and go in here. But that is extremely wishful thinking

I met with the owner of Maker's when JDM was close to completion and both Mickey Mantle's and Bricktown 54 were under construction. They were looking at the basement/canal level but the shallow floor to floor height with numerous concrete beams really complicates that space.

It's been years since I have gone out in OKC but I don't recall many of the lounge type places like we have here in Denver or were starting to pop up in Austin when we moved.

there's room for everything. OKC needs to accommodate all types of nightlife, not just focus only on bars or beer gardens. That is how you appeal to a diverse population, have options and OKC is still lacking in the upscale department.

This is true. For a long time, OKC has been a dive bar, country music, and quarter beer nightclub (ala Social) kind of town. Recently the nightlife selection has started to diversify and it's helped a lot. There still are some things missing though and upscale lounges is one of them.

Another Piano bar? I know murphy's is usually pretty busy, but I'm not sure OKC can support 2 unless there is something that sets them apart that I haven't thought of.

I mentioned this in the Brickopolis Thread, but Pete how can we get a process started to add a mid-block crosswalk across Walnut here? (Or is it Mickey Mantle?)

Sorely needed, and with this building space becoming active again, and Brickoplis opening up. It's in the best interest of pedestrian safety and walkability to get a mid-block crossing.
