Thread: Night Food Market in Downtown OKC

  1. Default Re: Night Food Market in Downtown OKC

How about that. I showed up around 10 and it was shockingly dead - I chatted with the pasta truck guy for a good while and he said it had been pretty slow all night. Perhaps my impression would have been a bit different had I gotten down there before sundown.

Can't speak for others, but as for myself, way, way too heated outdoors for me to want to sit/visit/eat lately, even after sundown comes around.

We were there last night. Had a great time. Got there right after the sun set and the weather was perfect - slight breeze, warm, but not hot. Lots of people with their kids and dogs. We took our two dogs and sampled some of the food.

More trucks then I've ever seen there in the past - took up the whole block.

Favorite was the vietnamese taco from Heo's Kitchen. And of course dessert at Roxy's.

better turnout than I would expect for an outdoor event in this oppressive heat...even at midnight, too dang hot for me

What do you consider "hot"??? At that time wasn't the temp still firmly above 100 degrees?

I stopped by earlier (around 8 ish) and it was pretty busy despite the heat. The main issue is that once I get my food and eat it, there is no reason for me to stay down there. So until there is something to make people stay down there, I don't think it will be packed for more than just spurts of diners. Maybe a bar opening down there that has an outside bar would be something to stay for, or live music, or something.

Im sure it will get there, but it may take a while.

When the sun isn't beating down on you, the ambient 100 degrees was nothing. Fully clothed and didn't even break a sweat. Dogs didn't even want the water bowls that Grouchy Sam's put out. People were playing hacky sack, kicking a ball around and one guy had a Nerf football. It was great out. Now, if you're obese or have other health issues it might be an issue, but we thought it was great and I'm one to keep my AC at 72-ish in my home.

Ohhh, and FYI - I'm bringing my own drinks (water most likely) next month. The vendors have all agreed to not sell drinks and instead direct people to Elemental to purchase them - which is fine - but I drink alot of water and they were getting $1.50 for what looked like a 9-12oz bottle. I'd need 3-4 of those with my meal. I'll just bring my own next time and a few folding chairs or picnic blanket.

I also agree with a previous poster, they need some entertainment out there.

It might even be nice just to have some street theatre or buskers. Or, Elemental could probably chat with the ACM about getting students over to perform.

The problem with that is that it is so small for the crowd that is/can/will be brought in by H&8th. Also, I bet ludavine does not want me to bring my food truck food inside to the bar.

Something with an outdoor patio that people can just get food and walk over to and sit outside and drink and eat and hang out all night would be awesome. I know elemental sells beer, or did, but it usually sells out extremely quickly, and its kinda a weird place to sit and drink beer. Great for coffee, but just not for this event.

I would think that this kind of event would be great outside speakeasy. Late night on the weekends or something, allow people to buy food and then go sit outside at speakeasy and drink and eat. That would be fantastic. I know it will be hard to create a venue like that downtown, around where this is, but hopefully something cool comes around.

I've now been to two of these in a row. I am making this a definite routine. Very fun to go to! Hopefully in the future they could make this a weekly or even a biweekly occurrence.

I've never been to one. But I think I will check it out one of these nights. Not really for the food, just to check out the ambiance of the thing.

    catch22: which pic is yours?

I agree. Great logo! And, great concept. I love H & 8th. I believe Elemental usually has a food truck there at lunchtime during the week as well.

Now, we need more dessert trucks. Waffle champion is awesome and I haven't tried Roxie's but look forward to it.

At my daughter's wedding in Chicago two weekends ago, I hired Beaver's Donuts to serve coffee and donuts to all the attendees towards the end of the reception. It was amazing. They serve melt in your mouth mini donuts (donut holes, actually) in a variety of flavors. I'd love to see that concept here.
