Thread: OU Loses Habern, Reinstates Reynolds, Franks, and Hayes

Sad news about Habern, but a lot felt he was done after the neck injury.

The other three have been reinstated after being kicked off for being in violation of team rules.

That was supposed to have been final. Scholarships pulled, the whole shebang. College Football is just a big business.

That's not accurate, Mike. It was originally an indefinite suspension.

You're right. The suspension was in May, but they did yank their scholarships in June and I thought it was over. I remembered that from this story from CBS:

It still seems strange to allow all three of these guys back and give them their scholarships again. Especially for these particular infractions. (Okay, 'rumored' infractions.)

That is correct also, Mike. You're original statement was that it was supposed to have been final. Please note this quote by Bob Stoops from the article you cited.

When asked if there was any chance that the three players would be reinstated to the team in the future, Stoops would only say "we'll see."
    That didn't sound very final.

    What were the 'rumored' infractions?

We're not allowed to discuss rumors here. LOL

OUs web site says the three are reinstated for practice only.

"Trey Franks, Quentin Hayes and Jaz Reynolds have all been reinstated to the roster for practice only, and will remain suspended indefinitely from participating in games".

    So what does that mean?

Bob Stoops announced St. Petersburg (FL) Gibbs High School cornerback Gary Simon will officially join the Sooners Thursday.

"Gary Simon comes in tomorrow and he's all set to go, another big time guy," Stoops told the media just before heading into the caravan event.

Simon's inclusion could be an important one for a program needing quality depth at the cornerback position. With Demontre Hurst and Aaron Colvin manning the starting spots heading into fall camp Friday, Simon is a player Mike Stoops has been very high on since signing day in February.

"Gary Simon is one of the premiere cover guys that I've seen," said Mike Stoops following national signing day in February. "He has a unique blend of size, speed and athletic ability that you don't see much in a big guy. He gives us a lot of flexibility."

    CENTER OF ATTENTION

During Oklahoma's caravan stop, Stoops, as well as offensive linemen Gabe Ikard, had their first chances to address the loss of starting center Ben Habern announced earlier Wednesday.

"You know, it's horrible," said Ikard. "Ben, he just has his best interests at heart, so that's one of those things where you lose your best lineman. It's horrible for him, it's horrible for the team, but now he's just taking care of his health and he's making a smart decision. I assume I'll be at center for all of two-a-days."

When pressed by the caravan M.C., Stoops nodded 'yes' from the audience to confirm Ikard would take over for Habern.

"I'm gonna miss Ben," said Stoops when he took his turn on the dais. "But we have other guys on the line with experience. It's the most experienced position we have on the team. In that regard, it will be OK.

"Gabe," said Stoops. "You will be playing center."

    MULTIPLE MEANS MULTIPLE

Stoops was also asked to clarify the situation mentioned during Oklahoma's release Wednesday when receivers Jaz Reynolds, Trey Franks, and defensive back Quentin Hayes were reinstated to the team. All three players were taken off suspension and allowed to practice with the team. But none of the players have been cleared to participate in games.

According to Stoops, none will be reinstated anytime soon.

"They'll miss considerable games. We haven't determined that yet exactly. It'll be multiple - multiple, multiple. In the end, that hasn't changed."

Judging by the statement of "multiple-multiple", any math major could surmise that means at least six games.
We won't get into how we arrived at that conclusion if you cannot.

But it doesn't appear Reynolds or Franks will be available to bail Jones out of this receiver drought anytime soon.

In terms of what the Sooners do have available for the start of the 2012 season, Stoops remained confident when addressing the situation in front of a large gathering in Oklahoma City.

"No concerns," answered Stoops when he took a question from the crowd about his worries heading into the season. "I did say we'll have plenty of receivers out there.

"We'll be better than you think - believe me - at receiver. Everybody just relax. We've got to go out and coach them, but we'll be OK."
