I have to disagree with one statement in the article though.

Like most kids growing up in the 1950s, Oliver did not get to enjoy soda pop at home; such drinks were rare special treats.

I was a kid growing up in the 1950s. Soda pop wasn't as prevelent then as now but we did have it at home and it was never a rare special treat.

Gotta agree. I graduated from high school in 1948 and we always had a full case, 24 bottles, of Royal Crown Cola on the back porch next to the refrigerator and several of its bottles cooling off inside. My dad would buy it direct from the bottling works, which was down near the Farmers' Market as I recall. One case would last for several weeks...

Oliver remembers the Triple AAA Root Beer Thirst Stands were the “Sonics” of their era and spanned several states.

I remember the one mentioned in the article at 13th & Broadway, and another that was on SW 44th just west of Blackwelder that later became Los Tacos. How many were there? Seems like there was one on 23rd st also.

I was born in '63 and soda at home was not an every day thing. Neither was eating out. Even McDonalds was a once a month thing if we went that often. About the only time I got soda with dinner was when we ate out and sometimes as a special treat when we went shopping.

"Soda pop" was a regular at my house, but mainly at lunch. Remember Tab, ewwww, that stuff never tasted good. Aside from that, store brands ruled. Man, we suffered some bad stuff; remember Fizzies?

RC Cola brings back memories of my youth also. My favorite snack was an RC with a Baby Ruth.

1) DoubleCola kicked RC Cola's butt and didn't even scoff in the general direction of PepsiCola or CocaCola.

2) Would Triple AAA Root Beer be the same as 9A Root Beer? A-Cubed Root Beer?

Even their caps are cool . . .


Their slogan should be: "What's YOUR Point?" (but they would probably encounter the wrath of that credit card ad agency's legal team)

P.S.: The original Tab sucked beyond words.
Even worse than the original Fresca.
Both of those made "Fizzies" or even plain ol' homemade Kool-Ade taste like heaven.

(it's that goddawful saccharin blech back bite. the one Tab was so famous for. like carbonated, no calorie embalming fluid)

Regular Wink ain't bad . . . It's "The Sassy One", you know . . . and from the dry part of Canada.

(in fact, so sweet that it is nearly unpalatable)

Cutting it with some good Canada Dry "Wink" or "Ginger Ale" would provide some balance.
"Irish Mist" or "Drambuie" is the same way. Isn't it? =)

Your lovely wife was most certainly a wonderful woman with a lot of class and good taste to match.
(And I mean that honestly and sincerely....within the limitations of this means of communication.)

BTW:
The first Mint Julip (non-authentic) I ever tasted was prepared with a simple syrup, etc. and Southern Comfort.

Point Root Beer is just about that good in a different context.
I hope Triple AAA is even better.

Thanks for the kind remark about Dianna. As for Southern Comfort, I can't stand it. It is very popular in England. It's always up front at their pubs with Jack Daniels and other good spirits.
Did AAA have the frosted mugs like Coit's? I always thought that was a nice touch.

There were a bunch and I am finding out about more and more locations. Del City had one across from the high school that is now a car wash. 15th and classen, 23rd and lottie, and is that south Penn Coits or Coits in Capital Hill?
