    Default Bye Bye Southside Coits

I watched the workers board up Coits yesterday. They took out the menus too. Looks like a ghost town. Another Landmark comes to a end.

    That's depressing

Their two northside locations are in sad shape.

    Southside Girl,
I was drinking root beer at Weber's from a small frosted mug that was free for children under ? Probably under five but at that age, I don't remember. And of course, when I grew up, I frequented the South side Coit's often. I always ate the number 7 hotdog. Chili and onions only.

Attention southsiders: I'm trying to arrange a Retro Metro OKC presentation at the NW 50 Coits with Jesse Coit as the speaker sharing a history on the family, the restraurants, the Christmas trees. I'll keep you informed...

That is too bad. I had heard from mgt at the other two locations that they weren't selling & staying open. I was hoping the same for the southside one as I noticed a coulle of weeks ago, they had on their message board that they had extended their hours to later (not closing at 3 pm)

Steve, I would be very interested in attending. I actually live within walking distance of that Coits and used to go there all the time (when I ate meat). I also worked there the summer between my Senior year of High School and my Freshman year of college. It was actually a really good place to work for a food service job. I made more than minimum wage and I got a free meal every night and 2 free frosty mugs of root beer. I really did build up my arm muscles that summer carrying those glass mugs.

I put 100% of the 'blame' for the south side closing on the owners/managers. The location and menu were a really good fit for the area. The owners simply refused to keep up the quality and the conditions of the building itself.

I've been in there many times over the years. Usually just to meet someone, have a root beer and talk while they ate. The few times in recent years I did eat there it was nothing special. I could get a better hot dog a few blocks away at Coney Island and a better burger at the Grill on the Hill, Del Rancho or even Woodbridge and Sonic.

Its a real shame because I preferred their for in the 80's and early 90's.

Either their heart was not in it or they couldn't hire people whose was. I went to school with one of the grandkids.

I've eaten enough #14s with cheese at the original location to buy the place. I drove by a couple of days ago and got a lump in my throat when I saw it had closed. My husband and I would love to come to the event and hear Jesse Coit speak!

Sad to hear about this! Corporations are taking over the "World". If you are not a big chain it's hard to hang in. Local companies do not have the money to re-model every 5-10 years as the chains seem to always be doing. Gone are the days when you walked into your local hang out and the same great faces were there to greet you. :-(

    And here you go....

I hope everyone is having a great summer. Retro Metro OKC resumes its monthly meeting schedule with gathering next Monday, July 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the atrium room at Coit's Drive-In, NW 50 and Portland. The restaurant's co-founder, Jesse Coit, will be sharing photos and a history of the restaurants she and her late husband Don started more than 50 years ago. Folks, Coit's was put up for sale a few months ago, and one of the three restaurants, the one frequented by Capitol Hill old-timers in the southside, recently closed. This is essentially a chance to catch a glimpse and enjoy what may be the last remnant of another era when there were no McDonald's, Burger Kings or Wendys, but instead locally beloved restaurants like The Spot, Spartan Drive-In and Shipman's. Please try to join us Monday if you can, and feel free to buy a Coit's root beer, hot dog or hamburger to enjoy while we hear from Jesse Coit and get a first glimpse of photos that will soon be added to our website.
