NYC support of OKC

So I'm out at my 2nd home in NYC for the next few weeks and I must say it has been pretty frickin Awesome seeing the support NY'ers have for us Okies in the spirit of Thundermania.

I've worn my Thunder shirts several times out here and every single time I've been out in public in the streets of Manhattan or Jersey City I've had numerous people give me the "Yeah! Go Thunder" or thumbs up or what have you. This team has really put OKC on the map and has done it in a very positive fashion!

One of the things I've definetely observed over the past 12 years of going back and forth every month between NYC & OKC is that NY'ers generally are not very observant of the rest of the country. To most of them, Most of the middle of the US is "fly-over" and generally speaking, they're only concerned with the tri-state and their occaisional trips to LA on the left coast, so it really makes me smile to see all of this attention to good ole OKC! I'm so proud of OKC and sad that I'm not there this week to soak in all of the excitement!

Don't forget that in 1995 and 2001 we became the only two cities in the nation to suffer massive terrorist attacks. In 2001, Oklahomans were sending support to NYC long after the attack had vanished from the headlines. The Oklahoma Baptist Convention's disaster-relief food truck made many trips up there to feed those working in the wreckage, staying a week or more each time -- and hardly ever sought any publicity for doing so. Other Sooners did similar things -- and while you're correct about the general provincialism of NYC and environs, I think that OKC in particular is an exception to their apathy...

Er - don't forget the Pentagon, Jim. The death toll was even higher than for OKC. But you're right, NYC and OKC are part of a small club.

True, but I think most of the US is pretty oblivious to Geography & finding things on a map, unfortunately.

I saw that billboard in Times Square a few weeks ago, mmonroe and thought how cool is this! The home grown OU boy and the current OKC stare representing in probably one of the most visible intersections in the world (it was on the side of a building on 7th Ave right at 42nd Street, directly in the heart of Times Square where the ball drops). Sooo coool!

Pretty cool stuff! Is that banner still hanging near ground zero at that small church? It's a banner from either individual Oklahomans or some organization based in Oklahoma, showing their support after the 9/11 attacks. I remember seeing it during my first and only trip to NYC back in 2006 and thought it was awesome.

You never know what kind of reaction you get out of people nowadays. Here's a little story:

I actually was in NYC this October and met up with a friend I knew who attended OU but grew up (and had moved back to) the Westchester County suburbs. We saw each other at a rooftop bar off 5th Avenue, and unknown to me she brought her boyfriend. He wasn't Jersey Shore material, but definitively gave off the vibe of a big tough Italian guy. So when I told him I was from OKC, I was already bracing for the barrage of moronic questions we get (Oh your from Oklahoma? Have you seen a tornado?). Instead, he was like "oh yeah I saw in fortune you guys have a really good economy" and "yeah I've always liked KD and the Thunder...you think you guys are going all the way the year?"

I think Steve Lackmeyer said it best on his twitter. This may be the first time in history that its "cool" to be from OKC.

There's still this annoying subtext to all the good press about the Thunder, however, implying that the Thunder is the only thing we have to do for entertainment in OKC, and that our enthusiastic crowds create a "college atmosphere."
