Thread: Joe Bonamassa

    Default Joe Bonamassa

I saw Joe Bonamassa last night at the Civic Center. He was amazing! He is not a household name but is one of the premier blues/rock guitarists today. He is a decent singer with a good band. Check him out if you are not familiar with his work and if you like great blues guitar.

Black Country Communion is one of his latest projects with Glenn Hughes on vocals and bass, Jason Bonham on drums and Derek Sherinian (formerly of Dream Theater) on keyboards. Pretty good stuff and he is a tremendous player.

I saw Joe Bonmassa on some TV special the other day and I can certainly see what all the excitement is about. This guy is a fabulous guitarist and I'm happy that you got to see him live. One of the most interesting things to me was how he was cranking out those hot licks wearing the shades and all, looking like one of those traditional blues/rock guys and then seemed sort of David Byrne-ish in a nicely nerdy sort of way when he was being interviewed.

If Jason Bonham is half the drummer his dad was he'll be fantastic.

He is getting there. He has been to the OKC metro area 8 times since 2003 starting at the Will Rogers Theater and this was his second time to the Civic Center. First time to fill it to capacity. He had to of course travel to Europe to be appreciated here at home. He sold out the Royal Albert Hall in 2009 and was joined by Eric Clapton for a song which signified his acceptance as a new legend in the making. It was captured on DVD and Palladia the Hi Def music channel started playing that concert. PBS then started airing it during fund raising shows and it consistently raised record setting amounts in the markets it aired.

In late 2011 Joe then filmed another performance at the Beacon Theater in New York City joined by Paul Rodgers, John Hiatt, and Beth Hart this spring that was aired in markets across the country again setting records for money raised. Most dates were coordinated with the airing on this tour. Add that to his appearance with ZZ Top and Derek Trucks inducting Freddie King into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame last month airing now on HBO and it is a matter of time he will be a house hold name not just to us older blues rock fans but to music fans in general.

He has come a long way since I saw him in a club in Tulsa with 25 people half of them there to see the opening act in 2002.
