I was thinking about getting a navigation system and wanted to see who has what and how you like it. Not sure to go with TomTom or Garmin.

Here is what I think based on the models I have used - TomTom's are simple to use and will work fine most of the time. I prefer Garmin for their software and durability. I have a hand held that has been to all kinds of places, bashed around, and it works fine still. I have no personal experience with their automotive models but have not heard anything negative about them.
I used to have a TomTom but now just use the TomTom app on my iPhone.
Works great and it's one less gadget, plus it never gets left in the car eliminating a theft temptation.
fwiw, a while back I worked with a chap who relied on his Garmin and he seemed very pleased with it.
And when I say he relied on it, I mean he absolutely relied on it. The guy had the worst sense of direction I have ever seen in a person. I never asked what he did before he got it, but it's possible he had a driver.
I've owned Garmin and TomTom and some other off brand. I kept my TomTom primarily because it was/is easy to use, easy to update and many models come with free maps for life.
That said, I rarely use my TomTom and instead use MotionX on my iPhone unless I'm on a long road trip.
I've never used a TomTom. I have a Garmin NUVI 1490 for the cars and a Garmin hand held for outdoorsy stuff. I'm perfectly happy with both.
I have a Garmin Zumo 450 (motorcycle) and a nuvi 750, happy with both of them. I have known some who had TomTom devices and most seemed happy with them.
