Ideas for south downtown

I would like to see an eight lane street with a wide median full of trees and flowers complimented with turn of the 19th century lighting. The street signs could be a decorative type to reflect the period, and all buildings would be required to be victorian or other period archetecture, filled with antique stores, ventage clothing and other specialty stores with cobblestone walkways.

I personally don't like the idea of an 8 lane street going through the middle of downtown. A 6 lane expressway like Northwest Highway is plenty large. We want a road that will serve as the gateway to downtown, but at the same time we don't want the look and feel of another interstate cutting through downtown.

I think we need to make sure we're strick on what we allow on this road. The worst think I can see now are a road that looks like Northwest Expressway or Memorial Road through the middle of the urban CBD.

Eight lanes plans for future growth. The long term cost is less to do it now than to wait the five years when it will be mandatory.

If we're going to build an 8 lane expressway, we might as well keep the interstate running through the middle of downtown. That last thing I want is south downtown turned into another interstate. We need greenbelts, not concrete.

I know work has already started on the fairgrounds. I just don't know that it will be enough. We need to ensure that we have the best show facilities in the country since horse shows are definitely a strong point in the city economy and image.

It should be enough to cover the barns end of the fairgrounds. But, IMO, we still need more money to cover a complete renovation of other parts of the fairgrounds. I'd like to see that come out of a MAPS III, along with money for improvements to our neighborhoods, parks, beautification, etc.
