I happened to catch this movie tonight on TCM and it made me think about what little appreciation we have today for movies of this era. This movie won the academy award in 1939 for special effects over The Wizard of Oz. All of the special effects were filmed on a studio back lot without computers 73 years ago. The effects are at the end of the first clip and beginning of the second.
Myrna Loy is an orginal Hollywood star of the first magnitutude.
While I didn't watch movies like this when they came out they were featured on TV in the 50's when I was young and I've always been fascinated by them.
To give a perspective, Tyrone Power was 25 and Myrna Loy was 34 when this was released. They would be 98 and 107 if still alive today.
